Guest guest
I love Markos questions! I love it when people want to learn, anything. I too knew very little when I became a vegetarian, alone almost a year ago. With the help of this group and just jumping in(I had to eat), I am now a successful vegetarian. I feel healthier than ever and swear things taste better with the meat goock off of my tongue. Similar to quiting smoking. My skin is clearer, I lost weight (5lbs) and have more energy(not weighted down). I have a question that is quite different. If everyone quite eating cows what would happen to them? Their current pastures would undoubtedly be turned into something else. Has there ever been real hypothesis on this? Thank you Kelly
Guest guest
The question about what if everyone quit eating cows is hypothetical and thus essentially irreleveant. Meateaters will often toss out the question " What if everyone became a vegetarian overnight? " in a pathetic last ditch effort to justify their hedonistic behavior. They will point out to vegetarians that cows have been domesticated and artificially selected (bred) to be docile and passive. Therefore, they say, cows couldn't possibly survive in the wild. ::gasp:: No, really? A domesticated animal would have trouble making it in the wild? Meateaters must really think vegetarians are idiots. If everyone ever became vegetarian it would happen gradually. Unless of course mad cow disease wipes out every single beefeater, in which case all of the cows would die out too. As fewer and fewer people ate cows and purchased leather products, the ranchers would breed less and less cows. It's Basic supply and demand. By the time everyone became vegetarian, there would only be a handful of cows left. At which point the few cows that are left could either be (A) sterilized and left to die a natural death, and cows could become extinct. (B) We could send them over to India to be with their cousins, where they would be treated as sacred creatures, © The few remaining cows could graze at humane petting zoos. (D) Assuming that most people became a vegetarian for ethical reasons, they could live on truly humane free range oraganic farms and produce milk for those of us who still might wish to consume it. There are already TOO many cows in relation to the amount of pasture. Most cattle spend their entire lives in a cramped barn or feedlot and probably never see the sun. The government wastes a buttload of money by subsidizing land that is set aside for raising beef / dairy cattle. This money could be put to much better use on natural preserves. Some ranchers will say that if a cow isn't slaughtered for meat, older cows usually end up being killed by coyotes or some other predator. A rancher in Fast food nation said something like " This isn't a pretty sight. " Huh? And having the cattle being brutally slaughtered in factory farms IS a pretty sight? According to this guy, the fact that wild coyotes will attack old or sick cattle is somehow supposed to justify breeding and slaughtering them. Beef cattle are usually slaughtered when they're only a couple years old. Are cows not entitled to live long lives? Are humans so arrogant that they would insist that only humans enjoy being alive enough to have a right to live a long life? sadly, yes. , " Kelly " <kheli@c...> wrote: > I love Markos questions!
