Guest guest
I'm really upset today. I got a package with food from my rents and besides a few things with dairy or honey in them (which I could at least understand had been overlooked) there was some jerky thing made of dead ostrich and dead cows. It says it all over the friggin thing. I told my parents I'm going to send it back and that they'd better return it. I'm not sure yet whether this was someone (probably my brother's) sick idea of a joke or just an honest mistake, but I asked them never to send me food again. Now, I feel somewhat guilty for being a bit harsh, like a spoiled rotten brat. Perhaps I should just be thankful that they send me anything. Now that I'm a vegan, I've gotten so used to checking and re-checking ingredients of everything I buy I know I can't expect the same from them. Hell, my gf's been a vegan longer than I have and she still occasionally overlooks dairy or egg ingredients. My mom says they're avoiding beef ever since the mad cow scare. I told her she has a much better chance of getting heart disease or cancer from any meat product than BSE from infected beef. I just turned down a really good job (good in that it paid over twice what I make at a grocery store) selling knives; mainly because the sales demonstration included cutting pieces of leather, but also because part of the sales pitch was supposed to be telling the customer what meat products the knives were great for. Every kind of knife was " ideal " for cutting a different dead animal, fillet, steak, etc. Of course the grocery store I got hired at also sells meat and animal products, but I feel like at least I won't be contributing to it; they'd sell the same amount w/ or w/o me. I just wish I could go one day without being reminded how cruel and thoughtless people are. There's only one veg*n restaurant in my area and they won't hire me as a waiter because I have no waiter exp. persay. Anyway, thanks for listening to my rant. And if any of you have advice on how you would with this sort of thing, that would be great too.
Guest guest
dave, sorry that your parents sent you meat. uggh! how frustrating! i'd probably get mad if that happened to me. even if your parents don't accept your vegan diet, they should at least respect your decision. i hope this is a good lesson for them. how did your parents respond when you told them you were returning the food? were they apologetic? tell them to just send money next time! the grocery store job sounds better than the knife job....at least you are not at mcdonald's anymore! i've been reading fast food nation (almost done) and am so glad i don't support the fast food industry in any way! that industry (and those spawned from it) are atrocious! i can't believe the vegan restaurant won't hire you. is it a big place? could you work in the kitchen? hang in there dave, susie --- dave <dave4sale wrote: > I'm really upset today. Ah, parents... it never ends, does it? Guess what I got from my parents for Christmas? A HUGE set of knives, including every kind of butchering and boning knife you could ever think of plus a complete set of steak knives for six!! My thought when I opened the package was " oh no, what the H am I going to do with this... " . I will never use it, except perhaps for the bread knife and the paring knives. And it sure does take up alot of countertop space... cheryll
Guest guest
LOL....funny stuff Cheryll! I tell ya what...I've been wanting a set of knives for awhile. I use " steak " or " teethed " knives all the time for my meals. I also need some good heavy duty knives for chopping my veggies into finger snacks and sticks and such. That " boning " or " flexy " knife might work well on using the proper technique for shallots and garlic cloves... So do ya wanna trade....no, not parents, lol. The guy dropped a tomato on the knife and it just fell in half. After using the same knife to saw through a shoe and some nails, he dropped another tomato on the blade, and again, the tomato practically sliced itself. (The point, I guess, was to show that the knife wouldn't dull.) To sweeten the deal, anyone buying a miracle knife then and there would get a second miracle knife absolutely free! Not only that, he would throw in 4 miracle steak knives, a miracle chopping knife, and a miracle boning knife. Duly impressed with the tomato demonstration, I bought the whole set for about 20 bucks. Being a vegetarian, I didn't think I would have any use for the boning knife, but I found it to be very handy in cutting the skin off a pineapple -- because of its skinny blade, it's easier to take off just the skin without wasting the good part. Immediatly upon making this discovery, I rechristened the knife a pineapple knife. Andre
Guest guest
Me, too ;=) My 'boning' knife is used for carving around those vegetable rinds that otherwise defy a firm-bladed implement. That's what I tell myself. Also, it's sharper than the rest because it's been used less ;=) Pat > I didn't think > I > would have any use for the boning knife, but I found it to be > very > handy in cutting the skin off a pineapple -- because of its > skinny > blade, it's easier to take off just the skin without wasting the > good > part.
