My son the Vegan said one should not choose to have a cat as a pet if one is ethically Vegan unless one lives on a farm or some place where a cat can find its own meat. That way you're saving the cat, not supporting the evil meat packers, and not interfering with the cat's true nature. Very Taoist and ethically tolerant answer I thought.
