Thai Food--Even the Vegetarian dishes have fish sauce and who knows what

Thinking about this gelatin episode reminded me of another time I

realized that non-vegetarians just don't have a clue sometimes. I

went to eat at a nice Thai restaurant with a friend who is also a

vegetarian. They have a fairly extensive " vegetarian " menu there and

I naively assumed that things listed thereon were free of any sort of

meat, poultry, fish, shellfish, etc. Well, my friend thought to ask

about fish sauce. " Are you vegans, " the waitress asked? " No, we're

both ovo-lacto, " I replied, " but we don't want any fish sauce. " " Oh,

then you're vegans! " she said, confidently. " Just leave off the fish

sauce, OK? "

Last time we was ordering at a Thai non-veg restaurant, the waiter

observed we were selecting non-me*t dishes and asked if we were

vegetarian. We said 'yes' and he inquired about fish and fish sauce.

When we said 'no' to both, he quickly pointed to all the dishes that

were without both as well as without me*t. He also got a nice fat tip!

;=) We could have figured it out ourselves, probably, since we are not

innocents where Thai food is concerned, but it was nice not to have to

be asking the questions!

Best,

Pat
