Guest guest Posted November 30, 2003 Report Share Posted November 30, 2003 Hmmmm, I think the primary reason that cereal is fortified is because the grains have been processed to the extreme and the vitamins/minerals have been obliterated. Given North Americans' preference for highly processed foods, there are probably regulations stipulating manufacturers to add the nutrients to certain foods (if you can call them that!) - children developing Beri-Beri from eating Lucky Charms is not a good thing. Now oatmeal...there's a real food!
