Guest guest
These past posts have reminded me of an experience that I would like to share. This past July I was in Chicago for a Pampered Chef conference. I was surrounded by many women who all seemed to be on the Atkins diet and were very right-wing conservative. I kept asking myself why I was there, but the folks I came with from the Portland, OR area were more like me (liberal). Anyway, one night there was a huge storm and we were trying to find some place close to eat before going to the evening event. I started looking up restaurants in our hotel guide. I mentioned Italian, as Chicago is known for their delicious Italian food. Two of the folks in our group said, oh, no we can't do Italian as they're on the Atkins diet. So, we found a grill/bar just down the block and I figured I could at least get a veggie burger. So, here's the irony/hypocrisy. When we finally sit down, they served us a loaf of fresh/hot (white) bread and butter. The two women who couldn't eat Italian polished off the loaf themselves. Then our entrees came, I got a pretty good veggie burger. One Atkins gal ordered fried chicken strips and a side of mashed potatoes, the other ordered the chicken pot pie w/buttery, flaky crust. I really wanted to point this out, but the fact I had to stay in the same room as them for three more days, I didn't want to make things uncomfortable for me. What could they have eaten at an Italian restaurant? Grilled chicken with veggies, a steak if they felt so inclined, antipasta; so much more than pasta. I just don't understand it....I find it so sad.
Guest guest
that is too funny in a sad sort of way. the bottom line is everyone needs carbs and cant be denied them. I think what happened with those atkens ladies is,other than losing wil power, something inside their subconcious minds said you gotta eat some carbs and eat them NOW. lol stay cool, Dave
Guest guest
OMG! That is a great story and so typical of the misinformation and mentality of people that are on this Atkins diet and supposedly seeing carbs as the big " sin " ! They think if I dish contains meat it is automatically low-carb and healthy. Their menu items were a joke! *lol* Once, back in NY, I had a few friends over to watch a show. We had all decided we would eat something, but my one friend was on this no-carb diet thing. She brought a 5lb bag of raw hamburger and huge block of cheddar cheese. She fixed herself two huge burgers dripping with the cheese, and no bun or any vegetables. (no, she didn't use the whole 5lb. bag of meat, but close to half). It looked so gross, but she felt she was in her glory being able to eat like that. All I kept thinking of was how impacted her colon must be! *lol* Anyway, I didn't eat anything but a nice salad with a bit of an olive oil and vinegar dressing, and a nice veggie burger on a whole wheat bun. Then, later on during our movie I made some lite popcorn which she refused to have any as it would be " full of bad carbs " . Just crazy thinking! ~ PT ~ Life is the first gift, love is the second, understanding the third. ~ Marge Piercy ~~~*~~~*~~~*~~~*~~~*~~~~~~> , " pamperedveggie " < pamperedveggie> wrote: > These past posts have reminded me of an experience that I would like > to share. > > This past July I was in Chicago for a Pampered Chef conference.
