MILK SUCKS...

FOR THE ANIMALS:

Corporate-owned factories where cows are warehoused in huge sheds and

treated like milk machines have replaced most small family farms.

With genetic manipulation and intensive production technologies, it

is common for modern dairy cows to produce 100 pounds of milk a day—

10 times more than they would produce in nature. To keep milk

production as high as possible, farmers artificially inseminate cows

every year. Growth hormones and unnatural milking schedules cause

dairy cows' udders to become painful and so heavy that they sometimes

drag on the ground, resulting in frequent infections and overuse of

antibiotics. Cows -- like all mammals -- make milk to feed their own

babies -- not humans.

Male calves, the " byproducts " of the dairy industry, endure 14 to17

weeks of torment in veal crates so small that they can't even turn

around. Female calves often replace their old, worn-out mothers, or

are slaughtered soon after birth for the rennet in their stomachs (an

ingredient of most commercial cheeses). They are often kept in tiny

crates or tethered in stalls for the first few months of their lives,

only to grow up to become " milk machines " like their mothers.

FOR THE ENVIRONMENT:

Cow's milk is an inefficient food source. Cows, like humans, expend

the majority of their food intake simply leading their lives. It

takes a great deal of grain and other foodstuffs cycled through cows

to produce a small amount of milk. And not only is milk a waste of

energy and water, the production of milk is also a disastrous source

of water pollution. A dairy cow produces 120 pounds of waste every

day -- equal to that of two dozen people, but with no toilets,

sewers, or treatment plants.

In Lancaster County, Pa., manure from dairy cows is destroying the

Chesapeake Bay, and in California, which produces one-fifth of the

country's total supply of milk, the manure from dairy farms has

poisoned vast expanses of underground water, rivers, and streams. In

the Central Valley of California, the cows produce as much excrement

as a city of 21 million people, and even a smallish farm of 200 cows

will produce as much nitrogen as in the sewage from a community of

5,000 to 10,000 people, according to a U.S. Senate report on animal

waste.

FOR YOUR HEALTH:

Dairy products are a health hazard. They contain no fiber or complex

carbohydrates and are laden with saturated fat and cholesterol. They

are contaminated with cow's blood and pus and are frequently

contaminated with pesticides, hormones, and antibiotics. Dairy

products are linked to allergies, constipation, obesity, heart

disease, cancer, and other diseases.

The late Dr. Benjamin Spock, America's leading authority on child

care, spoke out against feeding cow's milk to children, saying it can

cause anemia, allergies, and insulin-dependent diabetes and in the

long term, will set kids up for obesity and heart disease, America's

number one cause of death.

And dairy products may actually cause osteoporosis, not prevent it,

since their high-protein content leaches calcium from the body.

Population studies, backed up by a groundbreaking Harvard study of

more than 75,000 nurses, suggest that drinking milk can actually

cause osteoporosis. Find out more by visiting our links page.

WHAT YOU CAN DO:

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the average American

consumes more than 550 pounds of dairy products annually, which is 40

percent of the bulk of the food we eat. Click here to see an

illustration of the " Food Pyramid " which is representative of actual

American eating habits.

Give the bottle the boot! Instead, try delicious soy or rice milk,

soy cheese, Tofutti ice cream, and tofu sour cream and cream cheese.

All are widely available at health food stores and many supermarkets.

Yeah milk sucks, I agree it's cruel and unhealthy, no denying that, but let's not lose sight of the fact that the REAL huge cause of many diseases such as heart disease and many cancers is tobacco smoke, and not only for smokers, but for non-smokers in the same home or workplace as people smoking. Second hand smoke is a great pollutant leading to early death and disease in non-smokers and has been for many years, and it's not even their fault, they are innocent victims. Non-smokers even get lung cancer too, and they hardly ever would if it weren't for smokers.

Smoking, both active ansd passive is linked to breast cancer as well as lung and throat cancer,

http://ash.org/dangers/bcancer.html

As for sick kids, I know all about that, I was a sick kid because of my mother smoking, my decision to go veggie and then vegan on ethical grounds made NO DIFFERENCE to me healthwise although it made me feel I was a better person for not harming animals. The only thing that helped me to be healthy and alleviated my mucus and chest trouble (which in some people is dairy linked) was moving away from my parents' home, I also had a constant headache all through my childhood and within a couple of weeks of leaving home, as well as the mucus and breathing trouble mostly clearing up, the headache was also gone only to return whenever I was occasionally around people smoking in a pub for instance. Leaving home at 19 was the first time I felt like a real human being and not some sick weakling, and all because of my mother and her dirty habit, which I was obviously always highly allergic to. I'm finally fighting back, I was poisoned and I am angry when people almost totally blame other poisons in dairy for diseases for which smoking is the real largest cause.

I am vegan and committed to staying an ethical vegan for life, BUT I will speak out when I see the vegan movement undermining anti-tobacco campaigning by overstating the role of dairy in cancers.

I can argue from experience of being a sickly child, and even if people argue that they think smoking is not so bad (even some vegans smoke or used to smoke and some of them tend to get sooo defensive, even to the point of saying it is not at all linked to breast cancer), they cannot dispute how it has been for me and the fact is I failed to reach my full potential because of feeling so ill from second hand tobacco smoke poisoning in my early years.

If you smoke, it's not only your funeral, it may well be your loved ones' funeral as well!

This message has not very well got through to AR people, I see so many of them still smoking on demos and protests in the UK, it looks just so stupid and pathetic and it's horrible for the rest of us, because even outdoors on a march it drifts. I was on a marcn in London a few weeks ago and it was really noticeable especially when we were sitting outside a pub afterwards and a lot of the protesters were there, obviously we stayed outide, but even then there a lot of them were smoking. Their veganism will not protect them from the harm they are doing to themselves.

Is it worth AR people smoking though if the smokers on demos and marches put people who are sensitive like me off going? It makes me so ill, that I am considering not going on a march again if I have to be surrounded by cigarette smoke, I felt very sick on the demo in London and after outside the pub, some of it might have been the car fumes in London but experience has taught me that tobacco smoke affects me worse! I'm nmo use to anyone

I believe demos and protests for the animals should be strictly non-smoking affairs, it creates a very bad impression on the public to have people smoking. We have to present a nice clean living image.

Dairy cows have no reason to feel let down by me, I am an ethical vegan and will always promote veganism on animal rights grounds but I will not make what I believe to be false claims about giving up dairy leading to improved health and less mucus for instance, because in my experience it made no difference to my health except mentally to my conscience and peace of mind.

My mucus and chest and head problems remained until I was able to live away from second hand smoke.

Oops typo!

Meant to say I'm no use to anyone if I am feeling ill for days after a exposure to cigarette smoke on a demo, much as I want to be there to add my voice to those against cruelty.

When there is a crowd of people walking along close together the smoke easily drifts over into the airspace of the non-smokers.

When I was on a protest outside a lab in Harrow a few months ago there were people on the protest smoking, so I diplomatically did a bit of door to door leafletting and kept away from the smokers, but I was not happy the impression it makes on the public that AR people do not care about their own health or other people's right to clean air. Smoking is just plain rude and disrespectful behaviour unless the smoker is in the middle of an empty field (or preferably in a desert) a good way away from other people AND put their fag ends in a bin and not drop them as litter! Only then would I say a smoker is respectful.

We have to present a nice clean living image.

ummmmmmm

why???

i'm vegan, so now i have to dress, look, act a certain way??

seems silly to me

that is you, and congrats fer clearing up

but, there is a huge corrolation between downing pus, i mean dairy, and heart

disease, intestinal distress, cancer , and a host of other ills

you want to focus on smoking, ok, thats you, but don't hurt the rest of us by

implying we are wrong to focus on wot we want to, ok?? you can do as you please,

you can have yer own opnions, and state them, but remember, they are yer

opinions, and not everyone agrees with you...just keep that in mind

i am sorry smoking has affected yer life so negatively, i myself was born

partially deaf and serverly underweight because my mother smoked while she was

carrying the lil parasite that was me around, but..as long as no one smokes in

my haus, i can always walk away..i have legs....these boots(vegan docs) were

made fer walking

cheers

Sigh, I didn't think I would have to explain this, if we want converts to AR/veganism we do better if we come across in such a way that the public will be likely listen to us when we do protests, we have their hearts and minds to win over, image helps, so we have to play the game a little if we want to get most people to listen to us seriously in the first place.

I'm a fully fledged vegan and AR person and even I tend to shy away from protests where people are smoking, it makes a person look really stupid and irresponsible, so how do you think it looks to the average animal eater? They are more likely to listen to the arguments if they are coming from someone who is not blowing smoke around and who looks reasonably normal in their dress.

Hi Fraggle. I always feel a bit awkward about lurking - it seems a

bit like spying although I know it's not and it's an accepted part of

these lists. Happier out in the open though!

>

> we can all discuss things here, right folks...i mean discuss, not

harrass or harrangue.....

Ummmm - mostly?

> don't make me beat people with the overgrown zuichinni in my

backyard

Don't waste it!

Peel, seed then chop the flesh into inch cubes (not too small). Chop

as many onions as you like, peel a chunk of fresh ginger and grate it

(and peel and crush a garlic clove or two if you like it). Sweat the

onion and ginger (and garlic) in a little oil until aromatic (just a

couple of minutes and do stir to stop the ginger and garlic

burning). In the meantime, scald and peel some fresh garden-grown

tomatoes. De-seed if you're fussy, then chop into large chunks. Add

the marrow (overgrown zucchini to you, Frags) to the pan, cover and

cook over a low flame for a few minutes until the marrow is starting

to soften. Add the tomatoes, a little salt, a grinding or several of

black pepper and a tiny pinch of sugar or drop of syrup if your

tomatoes are tart. Cook, covered, until the marrow is tender but not

too soft - the veggies should all be recognisable and hold their

shape and the onions should still have an al dente texture (won't be

long) and the tomatoes have broken down just a little, but not into a

mush. Pour over freshly-cooked brown rice or yummy bulgur, then eat

all yourself.

I made this up one year when we had tomatoes and marrow coming out of

our ears. On the basis that marrow and ginger jam is yummy, I

thought they might tase good stewed together. They do! And the real

beauty of this recipe is that it actually freezes very well, so you

can enjoy stewed garden veg in the middle of winter if you want.

Also goes well cold as part of a salad with a big chunk of fresh

wholemeal bread.

Dammit, I'm hungry now.

Then I resign!

I personally think that it's more important to project a happy image -

that veganism is about positive enjoyment of one's life rather than

grey-faced deprivation. You might not feel deprived to abstain from

alcohol, say, but many people would see it that way. I would too.

But you would not like to see a demo full of drunks staggering around, that would be absurd surely?

you seem to equate a few beers with out and out drunkeness

there happens to be a mile of difference between hangingg out and having abeer,

and falling down blind stinking drunk...in my case, about 20 beers..maybe

more...depending

you don't drink..fine, all well and good, but, yelling at the rest of us that do

isn't going to make us not want to drink

inform, educate, state opinions, etc...

see, we are all here to learn....we can learn a lot from each other..and, i know

i don't think the same as a whole ton of people here, and a lot of folks

disagree with me, but, ya know, i certainly hope i'm not gonna get pepper

sprayed fer sitting on my porch with a bottle of beer...

just my thoughts is all..not quite worth 2 cents..but....

Oh well, you said it but at least you aren't a smoking freak, and who is Dan White??

If it was an addiction all the people I know who have quit, my husband before we were together, and my dad and my gran, would not have all said it was not all that difficult, so I think I know enough people close to me who have quit to be able to say the addiction is all or mostly all in the mind!

Speaking from the perspective of one who ocassionally drinks tea socially

but is otherwise water-total, I agree with this. If " we " are to present any

sort of corporate image of veganism (which I think is a bad thing to do

anyway), it should be that we are normal people living normal lives who have

made a choice to live as vegans. I have no problem with people drinking

alcohol. Of course it can be done to excess which can be dangerous, but what

can't be?

I'm not completely teetotal, but I think a lot of people do drink too much. You certainly seem to have a bit of a thing for beer.

dan white killed mayor mascone of Sf and openly gay supervisor harvey milk in

the 1970's

he quit his job as a supervisor in Sf, then wanted it back...he just couldn't

have it back, so, he went on a rampage and killed 2 people.

his defense,, the famous twinkie defense, where he said he had too much junk

food which made him unhinged...and he got a lighter sentence...

SF erupted in chaos when the verdict came down, tho, there was a lot of reasons

for it...

i just mentioned it cuz you said " maybe he had a point "

I must have missed some emails here - where did the subject of smoking come from.

There is quite a good anti-smoking campaign stating the evils of tobacco use. The government does still however promote milk as being good for you. So I feel there is more need for people to point out the health disadvantages of milk.

Cathy

I don't think the smoking thing started here. I am confused as to where it

came from, out of the blue! Has it been an argument on another list and if

so why is it on this list. I like to think this list is a friendly one, and

not keen on arguments carryied over from other lists.

Jo

Is this going to turn into another anti-smoking forum? Shall I leave

now?

I think the point is that we cannot tell other people what to do. We have to decide for ourselves what parts of life we join in with and which parts we separate ourselves from. We cannot impose our will on everyone else.

RE: Re: milk sucksssssssss
