" The Tube " for one or our Subway. When we first arrived it was so confusing! Now that I look back to it, yours is a lot easier to understand! If I remember correctly, yours is color-coordinated as well. The people in general. Now I am sure there are a lot of differences depending on where you stay or go etc, but the areas we were in, it seemed as if " the English " were a lot more tolerant and friendly towards foreigners (that be me) than we are in most places. But take in stride I grew up on the South Side of Chicago, IL which was not so easy of a task and not the greatest of areas. Your streets are alot cleaner! You're taxi's (cabs?) do not go backwards? I couldn't understand this one but I took a cab somewhere and we passed the place and he said he couldn't back up. Of course driving on the opposite side of the road. OH! And the taxi's have " suicide doors " or the back ones open opposite the front. Your healthcare system was way different as well. My father got sick while we were there and we had to visit a doctor. My father is 100% Polish and we have insurance. I guess back then, not sure now, England had an agreement with Poland of some sort to offer FREE healthcare (something not heard of in America)to Poland. But though Polish, my father is American. So they were really unsure what to do! Hmmm... money of course. Oh! You're movie theaters had a curtain in front of the screen and before the show started the theater showed commercials. We do that now as well, but didn;t back then. But still have yet to see a curtain here. Gee... I'm going to have to think some more on this. And looking back, I am not sure if I made America look too good! But it really is a great place to be. I work for a company whose head office is in Northbrook, IL, and I have to agree that the Americans I deal with are almost a different species (and I don't mean that as an insult to either English or Americans). Just to clarify, me being cynical, I would suggest that it is that we are tolerant and friendly towards *white* foreigners. Our media in particular have a very nasty streak when it comes to " immigrants " , and this often leaves its mark on the population in general :-( > Your streets are alot cleaner! Wow - I can't imagine a cinema without a curtain - it's part of the whole cinema experience for the English (well, at least in our area!) :-) I think it might be because a lot of our original cinemas were converted theatres (i.e. a theater with a big screen put on the stage!) - so they just didn't bother removing the curtains!
