Guest guest
t r u t h o u t | Statement Craig Noble Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) California Gov. Davis To Sign Landmark Global Warming Law On Monday Friday, 19 July, 2002 On Monday, July 22, California Gov. Gray Davis will sign pioneering new law to protect California's health and environment by reducing global warming pollution from all new cars and trucks sold in the state, America's largest automobile market. The bill reducing carbon dioxide emissions is the first of its kind anywhere in the world, and promises to reshape the global warming debate throughout the United States. It stands in contrast to the global warming gridlock in Washington, and White House inaction in particular. The law also promises major changes for the automobile industry. Carmakers have the know-how and the technology today to address CO2 emissions, but have not deployed it effectively. Signing ceremonies will take place at 10:00 am in Los Angeles, and 2:00 pm in San Francisco. NRDC will have experts on the ground for both events, and available all weekend to provide analysis and commentary, starting with the following issues: -- How can carmakers achieve the CO2 emission cuts? -- Is the law good or bad for the California economy? -- What are the politics behind the law? -- What are the national and international ramifications? -- How does global warming impact California? -- What is the state of global warming science?
