Guest guest
In my posting in on Friday March 5, 4:53 PM, I stated the following: " Just one reminder -- when eating in SouthBayVeggies events, it is requested that all food be vegan. " My statement was not correct. Sarah Kishler states: " South Bay Veggies doesn't have an official stance on this. We rarely ever do have any non-vegan food at any of our events, and if the event host wants to make sure all the food at an event is vegan, she/he is more than welcome to announce that. " Looking back over the last several years, one can see that there has been a progression on this issue. Several years ago, a particular annual potluck event contained this instruction: " WHAT TO BRING: A vegetarian dish to share! As always, please label any non-vegan dish. " whereas in recent years that has been replaced by: " WHAT TO BRING: A vegan dish to share! " Even as recently as last year, the instructions for one of our monthly dinners at a local vegetarian restaurant were: " The dinner is open to both veg*ns and non-veg*ns, but please note that, if you will be sitting with the group, only VEGAN food can be ordered. " That particular restaurant recently switched to being 100% vegan, so the previously-used instructions have been dropped. There are several vegetarian restaurants in our area that were previously 90-95% vegan but have become 100% vegan. Names that come to mind are Vegetarian House, Merit Vegetarian Restaurant, Loving Hut, and Happy Bamboo. Some others, like Good Karma Vegan Cafe, were vegan from the start. Garden Fresh Vegetarian Restaurant in Mountain View is, I think, 100% vegan but I don't know if it was vegan from the start. I apologize for my incomplete information. The San Francisco Vegetarian Society has official Potluck Guidelines (http://ww.sfvs.org/newsletter/archive09/winterevents.pdf) that includes this statement: " Bring a vegan (no animal products or byproducts such as dairy or honey) dish to serve 8 - 10. " Bay Area Vegetarians has official guidelines (http://www.bayareaveg.org/guidelines.htm#guidelines) for their events that state the following: " Our philosophy is that vegan food is the lowest common denominator, and everyone can eat it. Therefore, when food is served at events, like vegan food parties or restaurant outings, for the comfort and enjoyment of all guests, our food policy is vegan foods only.
