These groups of up to 20 whales engage in elaborate social hunting behaviors when attacking schools of herring. Their hunting technique includes division of labor with task specialization within the group as they trap herring in a cylindrical bubble curtains. Fred Sharpe (Ph.D. Simon Fraser University) has been investigating the social foraging ecology of Alaskan Humpback whales since 1987. Join us at SRI as Fred discusses his insights into the complex world of humpback behavior and the implications for humpback social intelligence. Fred's studies have received international recognition; he had been awarded the Fairfield Award for Innovate Marine Mammal Research, and the Society for Marine Mammology Award for Excellence in Scientific Communication. Fred is also a naturalist in the classical tradition. Café Scientifique events are open to all free of charge. No reservations are necessary.
