Today's San Jose Mercury News has an appalling column by Patty Fisher defending

the declawing of cats. It's on page B1 of the print edition, in which the title

of Fisher's column is " Declawing cat isn't so bad really " . Read Fisher's column

online at http://www.mercurynews.com/patty-fisher/ci_13743890

For an instant education on the issue of cat declawing, see the readers'

comments in the bottom half of

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/blogs/cityinsider/detail?entry_id=50922

Bans on declawing of cats have been passed on first reading (a second vote is

needed for final approval) by the city councils of San Francisco, Los Angeles,

Santa Monica, and Beverly Hills.

Declawing is uncommon outside North America. Many European countries prohibit

or significantly restrict declawing, as do parts of Australia, Israel, New

Zealand, Japan and Turkey. For details, see

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Declawing#Declawing_practices

Our friend Michelle reports that " a couple of years ago Patty Fisher wrote a

column bemoaning the increase in the Silicon Valley crow population (largely

caused by human overpopulation) and suggesting that people shoot crows with BB

guns. After her column ran, the wildlife center had an influx of crows with

embedded BBs. "

Thanks is due to lauren and Michelle for bringing these matters to our

attention.
