Take a look (but don't watch the videos if you are faint of heart): http://www.hsus.org/farm/news/ournews/veal_investigation_103009.html People ask me why I am vegan (versus just being vegetarian), and this investigation is why. I generally refrain from discussing the reasoning for my eating habits because the truth is that most people really don't want to know, and I want to be careful about sounding preachy, but after spending two full months watching footage and reading details of the Hallmark investigation (which were all " spent " dairy cows) and this recent veal investigation, I think it's important that people become aware. Most of my meat-eaters friends / family members would never eat veal; however, the veal industry would not exist without the dairy industry. Cows can only produce milk if they are impregnated; the male offspring are useless, so they are taken from their mothers within hours of birth and sold to places like the factory referenced above. This is true even of small organic farms that sell milk at farmers markets. Unfortunately, unless you have your own cow, there is NO sustainable way to produce dairy in modern society (ironically, I believe there could be a sustainable way to produce meat, however, if you buy from responsible farmers). Also, all dairy cows end up as cheap beef anyway. If you want to help animals, the best thing you can do is give up dairy (which is bad for you anyway) -- beef cattle have a dream life compared to dairy cows and veal calves. I know it's hard to think of it this way, but essentially, if you are eating dairy, you might as well be eating veal. In honor of these calves, will you pledge to give up dairy for one day or even a week? -- Gina Tomaselli J.D., 2009 University of California, Berkeley School of Law (Boalt Hall)
