If we all began doing this, change might happen sooner. Whatchathink? I would do it, but I rarely eat in restaurants. The most important objective is to change the way our needs are communicated to the restaurant owners. Ron Halfhill Verdant Ventures 570 E. I wonder if there is something that we could do as a group, to impress upon restaurants that there is a demand for correct and comprehensive labeling of vegetarian items and vegan items. After I saw Melissa's reference to the Fresh Choice website, I looked and found on http://www.freshchoice.com/rotation_ca.html that, on that webpage, they label " Vegetarian " items with a circled " V " and they label " Vegan Vegetarian " items with a circled " VV " -- two V's. That's a bit confusing because the " VV " looks like a " W " . And I wonder whether their definition of Vegetarian permits eggs. In the restaurant itself, they don't use the " V " and " VV " abbreviations -- they spell out the words " Vegetarian " and " Vegan " on the tags. -- Mike ------ -------- vegan4animals Monday, November 10, 2008 9:06 PM lauren Ornelas Cc: activistsforanimals Re: [ActivistsForAnimals] Standard labels for vegan & veg menu items Just to clarify my original post. The veggie burger at Hobee's is not labeled " vegan " on the menu. I also didn't just ask if it was " vegan. " I asked if there were animal products, including cheese and/or eggs. And the server said, " no, there's no cheese or eggs... " Yeah, not everyone understands there's a difference, between vegan and vegetarian, but this is a different issue when the server clearly states it does not contain cheese/egg and then, double-checks, and oops, yeah, there is cheese and egg... Oh, and anyone interested in the vegan options at Fresh Choice, it clearly states it all on the website. http://www.freshchoice.com I used to go there a lot and would get a survey you could fill out and I continuously filled it out thanking them for having so many vegan options, but asking them to label the vegan dressings and breads, etc. I guess I must have been the only one asking, because they still haven't done it... The Hobees in Campbell, I saw the box of what they made their veggie burgers from and they were vegan. Some places do use the term vegetarian to mean vegan - unfortunate - but true. (not Whole Foods). ------ -------- Sage, Mike [mksage] Monday, November 10, 2008 4:48 PM vegan4animals; ; activistsforanimals [ActivistsForAnimals] Standard labels for vegan & veg menu items There needs to be a standard way of labeling vegan and vegetarian items on menus. In Fresh Choice, some of the dishes are labeled with the words " vegan " or " vegetarian " . Not everything is properly labeled there (e.g., breads & desserts are not labeled), but at least they've made a start. I have also seen some labels in the deli section of Whole Foods. Schemes to designate vegan/vegetarian foods can absorb dozens of ancillary issues and become extremely complicated. For example, see: http://www.foodstandards.gov.uk/multimedia/pdfs/consultationresponse/sum mrespvegi.pdf To get off the ground, the scheme must be simple. -- Mike ------ -------- vegan4animals Saturday, November 08, 2008 1:50 PM ; ; activistsforanimals [ActivistsForAnimals] Hobee's in Mountain View-not so vegan burger Hi everyone, I've been told at other Hobee's locations that their veggie burger was vegan. But when I ordered there today I thought I'd double check and the server told me it had no cheese and no eggs. Then she came back 10 minutes later and said they double-checked the box and it does contain cheese and eggs. I don't know if this is the case at all Hobee's locations, but just wanted to warn everyone to be aware at the location on Central Expressway in MV. I'll contact the company and see what they say. They assured me that the tofu scramble is vegan as is the black bean chili. Take care, Melissa
