We’re turning the corner from summer into fall, school is starting

for some, the political season is heating up, and we’ve got a full

month of activities at Frugal Foodies and beyond.  So please find

below the calendar for what’s coming up in September in the

Frugalsphere, and also some plugs for some other community events

that I hope you’ll check out:

Plug #1: Karma Kitchen—Karma Kitchen, the Berkeley-based ‘experiment

in generosity’ is back, starting September 7th, now working out of

Taste of the Himalayas Restaurant in North Berkeley.  Instead of

being a Saturday night affair, it’s now a lunchtime Sunday event, and

this is definitely something that you’ll enjoy checking out.  Not

sure that there’s anything else quite like it, and you can learn more

about it at http://www.karmakitchen.org .

Plug #2: DiversityWorks Trivia Night—DiversityWorks is holding its

annual trivia night on Sunday, September 7th, 5:30-8:30PM, at the

Aquatic Park Preschool, 830 Heinz Avenue in Berkeley, 94710.  It’s a

fundraiser entirely by donation, and we’ll serve some finger food and

booze, in addition to lots of fascinating tidbits of info with which

to impress friends at your next party.  And don’t worry if you’re not

a trivia wiz as it’s team trivia, and you can join a team upon your

arrival.  All proceeds to benefit DiversityWorks, http://

www.diversityworks.org and donations of any amount are welcome.

Please send an email to moses if you plan to

attend as we’re hoping to get a good headcount for food and drink

purposes.  DiversityWorks also has several other cool programs like

our book club and political dialogue group—free and open to the public

—that you can learn about on the website.

Also, San Jose Frugal Foodies Would Love Your Support.  We’re

struggling a bit to fill the house in San Jose and would love to

consistently have 12 or more people on hand for a whole host of

reasons.  So please help out our young hosts, Jaclyn and Melissa, by

helping to spread the word about Wednesday nights in San Jose.  And

they could also use your support if you’re interested in helping with

menu planning and shopping, have non-perishable staples to donate, or

even would like to host an occasional night on their behalf.  You can

contact me about this or send them a note directly at

sanjose1 .

And now for what’s coming up in September at Frugal Foodies (Tuesdays

in Berkeley, Wednesdays in San Jose) :

Tuesday, September 2nd—it’s one of our last Cuisines of the World

nights, as we cook food from countries that start with the letter U.

Not sure if we can top the amazing treats from the letter T, but

we’ll explore the cuisines of Uganda, Uzbekistan, Uruguay, United

Arab Emirates, and the US of A.  So perhaps none of these are

international food meccas, but we’ll have a good go at it, and come

up with some vegetarian delights.

Wednesday, September 3rd—Are you intolerant or allergic to wheat?

Know someone who is?  Even if cooking something new is your goal, why

not strengthen your dietary consciousness and learn to prepare

vegetarian gluten-free meals. By participating in this enlightening

evening you are not only advocating Celiac awareness, but becoming

more sensitive individuals in a community of important dietary needs

and restrictions. After all, eating is one of the most natural and

enjoyable activities in our lives that many of us often take for

granted!

Tuesday, September 9th—It’s our Cooking the Books night, and for the

first time in a few years, we’re going RAW.  We’ll be cooking, er

preparing, several dishes from The Raw Food Primer, by Chef Suzanne

Alex Ferrara.  One reviewer of this book writes “This is a

delightful, non-intimidating book for anyone wanting to explore raw

cuisine. Beautifully illustrated, it also makes a great gift. I have

given copies to friends and family members as an introduction to

flavorful, energy-packed, unique dishes.”  And for those of you have

not prepared raw, it aint easy, it aint fast, we can’t cook the whole

spectrum with our limited time, and we will likely even need to break

some of our power tool rules here at FF.  But at least there won’t be

competition for the stove and oven, and that will sure be a change.

Wednesday, September 10th—SPECIAL NIGHT AT A SECOND SJ LOCATION!

This is the first event in which we will hand off the Frugal Foodies

duties to some dear friends of ours, Laurel and Dan! Having attended

the majority of Frugal Foodies Downtown SJ events, these down-to-

earth folks will host a Mediterranean feast in the comfort of their

own home, only a few blocks away! You won't want to miss falafel and

Lebanese French fries among other yummy Middle-Eastern delicacies.

This cool couple can't wait to see you in their kitchen! Sign up in

the same way as you normally would, but please note that we’ll send

out the new address info a few days beforehand.

Tuesday, September 16th—This is our Guest Chef Night in Berkeley, but

I still don’t know who this special guest chef will be.  So sign up

for what promises to be a tasty night, and stay tuned for info about

whom the guest chef will be.

Wednesday, September 17th—Inspired by our friends from one of San

Jose’s urban gardening project " Veggielution " , this evening is

dedicated to one of their greatest veggies-- Zucchini!! Grown locally

and in abundance, these mean green disease-fighting weapons will be

featured in every dish. Organic at its best...this zucchini is

special, as it was harvested and maintained by members of the South

Bay community...the San Jose Frugal Foodies Crew included!

Tuesday, September 23rd—This night will be all about pecans.  Pecans

will be the Special Guest Ingredient and we’ll include them in every

dish from salads to casseroles to pies.  Come enjoy this most-

versatile nut, and help elect a future ingredient for an upcoming

night at Frugal Foodies.

Wednesday, September 24th—Frugal Foodies in San Jose will be closed

for housekeeping, but please consider helping out the San Jose crew

so that it will stay super strong (see note above)!

Tuesday, September 30th—it’s a fifth Tuesday, and it feels like it’s

time for an Iron Chef night at Frugal Foodies.  We’ve not tried this

for years, but the way it will work is that we’ll break folks up into

a couple/few teams with a leader for each and then see what 90

minutes of chaos can produce.  So please consider joining the fun,

creativity, craziness, as it takes on an even higher level of quirk.

No reality TV experience necessary, just a sense of adventure. This

special night will also be a benefit for Californians for Justice,

and some of their important equity in education work.  You can learn

more about them at http://www.caljustice.org , and you can read more

about our benefit nights at http://www.frugalfoodies.org/benefit .

Please remember that you need to pre-register and pre-pay for all the

dates above.  You can register by sending an email to

info, and learn more about how everything works at

http://www.frugalfoodies.org .
