" Radiant! Blueberry is some pig "

The picture of the little girl petting Blueberry the pig (page 1B, Aug

4) before Blueberry was sent to slaughter evoked deep sadness in me, as

I'm sure it did for many readers. While caring for Blueberry, the child

learned that this pig was an intelligent, sentient being who became her

friend. If the 4-H philosophy is, " Learn by Doing " , this child's lesson

was incomplete. Completion would mean following Blueberry to the

Yosemite Meat Company, which, of course, none of us would want her to

do.

As a social worker for many years working with children, I believe the

4-H experience to be emotionally conflicting, confusing, and constitutes

abuse of a child.
