Guest guest
While it may be possible, I distrust the source. If you read it all the way through, it's being promoted by a Christian group who predicts this famine combined with climate change is the coming of the Rapture described in Revelations. We have crop loss every year. This is nothing new. But, hey, maybe there is a grain of truth to it, so to speak. I believe in full disclosure before promoting or subscribing to any doomsday prophesy. I sure will. http://www.theamericannightmare.org/FOOD_SHORTAGE__AAK.html Sam P.S. I just heard that Arkansas lost its winter wheat in the floods they have experienced this last week, and at least 5 other farming states experienced those same floods. ---
Guest guest
I actually just got another email in a similar vein without the Rapture rhetoric from an Investing newsletter I to. It reminded me of one thing that we, as a vegetarian group, should be aware of and promoting to any concerned audience. Rather than instilling fear and promoting stockpiling (since neither are a workable solution in the long-term), we should be reminding folks that a large proportion of US agricultural capacity is being used for feed grains instead of food grains. It takes 8 to 10 lbs of grain (not suitable for human consumption) to raise livestock for meat, dairy, and egg consumption. Promoting a vegetarian diet or even a reduction in meat consumption could possibly free up production capacity to shift towards a more direct food supply--one where food is not funneled through farmed animals in a wasteful and environmentally detrimental way. Yes, that's right. The solution to our climate change, one that Al Gore regrettably did not mention is a reduction of greenhouse gases produced by industrialized animal agriculture. Our fuel dependency would also be greatly reduced since it takes a large amount of oil (and petroleum products) to raise and transport meat from farm to table. I believe all of these talking points are addressed in The Food Revolution by John Robbins for anyone wanting more information (and more credible references) to share with friends, family, co-workers, and anyone interested in how they can help become part of the solution instead of part of the problem. Instead of resorting to " duck and cover " -like fear tactics of prior generations, let's use this opportunity to present some real viable solutions to what very well may be a growing problem. If you want to help instead of just scaring, you might consider joining a leafletting adventure like the Bay Area Vegetarians conduct monthly (or near monthly) to promote a more sustainable diet.
