Volunteers Needed! Help Raise Chicken Coops for Homeless Roosters!

Hi,

I've been stunned and upset at the volume of roosters that animal

control in our areas receive that never find a home. In addition,

people frequently contact me about roosters that need to be placed

because they bought chicks and find out that one of them is a

rooster. These are companion birds who have been coddled and loved

their whole lives.

I know that all of you care greatly about the welfare of farm

animals, so I'm asking for your help. Many people who do live in

rural areas would have chickens, but they don't have the skills to

build a chicken coop or have someone who can do it for them, and

there are no commercially available predator-proof chicken coops to

purchase. So I came up with this idea. If someone is willing to

rescue a rooster, a group of volunteers will come and build a simple

yet predator-proof chicken coop for them. All they must supply is

the materials. I will give them a materials list that they must have

before the project starts, as well as information about recycled

materials they can seek out. With enough people working on the

project, it could be accomplished in a day. And you'd meet people

who care about animals in the process.

In each team of builders, we would need some experienced people with

carpentry skills who can build using the plan. The others can

perform simpler tasks and learn some building skills. I'm trying to

find a nonprofit to work with as well so that professionals could

deduct their time as a donation.

I would first place a rooster with them. Someone would check up on

the rooster after a week or two, and then a month or two, and if all

is well, we could place some rescued hens with him, too. Roosters

are the #1 animal that farm sanctuaries have trouble placing. And,

the only way to ensure that you are getting humanely produced eggs

is to have companion hens that you care for yourselves.

If you're interested in volunteering, or know someone interested in

rescuing some chickens, please let me know.

Thanks!

Cheryl
