Guest guest
Hi, The rescued battery cage hens that I received and have been caring for are now ready to go to homes! I've quarantined them, treated them for coccidia (an intestinal organism), and consulted with our state poultry vets and had many tests conducted to ensure they weren't carrying disease. They are becoming very friendly and they all crowd around me wanting to be picked up. They have such great personalities, and all of them are different. They make just as wonderful animal companions as a dog or cat, and can be much less work, too. I can help you figure out how to care for them and provide housing. You can buy a chicken coop or build one yourself. Many cities allow a few hens. If you or your family eat eggs, keeping some rescued hens is really the only way not to feel too guilty about it... Free range is often not what you think, and they kill them while they are very young. It's costing me about $150 a week for food and bedding for these sweet ladies, and about 15 to 20 hours a week of my time, so I really need to get them in homes soon. Please let me know if you can help. (Having only three or so hens is much less expense and work, of course.) I will deliver them to you. That's partly because I've become very fond of them and want to make sure they have safe living conditions. But I've seen plenty of rustic country properties, and my only concern is that they are safe and loved, and not that you live like Martha Stewart! Thanks!
