Please join me and Bay Area Vegetarians, on 8/27/05 at 7:30 pm, as we write

letters to state, county, and federal legislators and officials, corporations,

etc. encouraging compassion to animals. We will be a voice for the voiceless

with our personal, handwritten, high-impact letters.

New activists are encouraged to attend.

It's helpful if you can bring:

-pen and paper

-envelopes

-name of your State & Federal legislators--find them at

http://www.vote-smart.org/

-veg or animal rights topics to write on (or use the ones provided)

We will definitely be writing letters to protect rabbits and oppose the US

Department of Agriculture's new policy of classifying rabbits as poultry:

" The US Department of Agriculture has classified rabbits as " poultry " to avoid

required

protections for the species under the 1958 Humane Methods of Slaughter Act

(the government seems to think a mammal is a bird). Among other things,

this means that rabbits may be fully conscious while being slaughtered.

With rabbit meat becoming more popular, this is very distressing. Rabbits

are the third most popular companion animals in this country, yet if someone

treated dogs and cats this way, the perpetrators would be charged with

animal cruelty. "
