Guest guest
Poultry News USDA scientists transform chicken feathers into plastic by Ann Bagel on 3/8/05 for Meatingplace.com Scientists from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Agricultural Research Service are closer to bringing new technology to turn chicken feathers into plastic products to the marketplace. Walter Schmidt and Justin Barone, who work in the ARS Environmental Quality Laboratory in Beltsville, Md., have developed and applied for a patent to convert cleaned and chopped feather material into plastic products on a laboratory scale. The plastic is made on traditional plastics processing equipment using chopped chicken feathers and other naturally derived materials and has properties similar to commodity plastics such as polyethylene and polypropylene. Earlier research by Schmidt and Barone found that feather fiber could also be added into currently used plastics to make composites. The fibers strengthen the plastic components and reduce the weight of the material. be the change...
