More info on the conference:

I'm chairing a conference on progressive lawyering at Stanford Law

School called " Shaking the Foundations. "

For the first time, the conference will feature a panel on animal

rights. The panel, entitled " Animal Liberation and the Law, " is the

first in the conference's 6 year history to address the burgeoning

field of animal law.

This panel will explore the various legal strategies for securing

protection for nonhuman animals. Animal law is one of the fastest

growing fields, and many consider it the next frontier in public

interest advocacy. Panelists will discuss the respective roles of

litigation, legislation, academic scholarship, and other approaches to

dismantling the property status of animals and fighting for the

establishment and recognition of basic legal rights for animals.

" Animal Liberation and the Law " will feature an extremely impressive

set of speakers: Joyce Tischler (executive director of the Animal Legal

Defense Fund), Virginia Handley (California Coordinator for The Fund

for Animals), Taimie Bryant (professor of Animal Law at UCLA Law

School), Jennifer Abbott (animal rights documentarian and activist),

and Bruce Wagman (animal law practitioner, professor of Animal Law at

UC Berkeley Boalt School of Law, Hastings Law School, and USF Law

School, and partner at Morgenstein & Jubelirer.)

Shaking the Foundations is an annual conference open to everyone. It is

designed to educate the general public on progressive legal issues, and

to encourage law students to use their legal skills in the struggle for

social justice, to provide a forum for the discussion of creative

strategies used by legal advocates and activists, and to help students

develop relationships within the progressive legal community.

Shaking the Foundations gives students an opportunity to learn about

the options available for public interest and pro bono advocacy. This

year’s conference will feature panels on public interest practice,

disability rights, community lawyering, gay rights, the environment,

international human rights, juvenile justice, animal rights, and the

2004 election.

The conference will also feature a screening of the award-winning

documentary The Corporation, followed by a discussion with director

Jennifer Abbott.

Your $15 registration fee will get you a film screening, a day of

panels, and a gourmet keynote lunch (vegan option available). Though

the registration fee is strongly suggested, as this is a non-profit,

student-run conference, no one will be turned away for lack of funds.
