Guest guest
The following message has been forwarded to SBVS on behalf of FARM (Farm Animal Reform Movement): We, here at FARM, would like to share with you the responses to a questionnaire on the human treatment of animals that we mailed to hundreds of US politicians and political candidates. I've included the responses from California Representatives and candidates. Please feel free to take these responses into consideration for the next election. Here are our questions, followed by the responses: Do you favor: 1. Including farm animals in federal and state anti-cruelty statutes? 2. Strict enforcement of federal and state humane slaughter legislation? 3. Ban of veal crates and sow gestation stalls? 4. Ban of battery cages for laying hens? 5. Regulation of emissions and antibiotics in factory farms? Believing farm animal protein to be necessary for human development & that it should be of excellent quality I feel ranchers & farmers should get grants, tax deductions & exemptions for creating protection from wildlife to allow animals to range free, & to research fearless painless death to improve quality of life & product. " John Reiger Candidate, US House CA- Maybe Maybe Yes Yes Yes " I would support efforts to make the lives of farm animals less stressful, and make farm practices more humane (if that word can be applied to non- humans). " Lawrence Rockwood Candidate, US House CA-53 Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Jerry McNerney Candidate, US House CA-11 Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Ted Brown Candidate, US House CA-29 " I believe that the issue should be on a state-to-state basis. The U. S. Constitution doesn't give Congress any powers in this area. I sympathize with your position. If it's true that 93% of the people are concerned about the issue, what I propose would be most effective, namely requiring the labeling of meat products to include information as to the treatment of those animals. If consumers object to how a company treats its animals, they can refuse to buy the product, and instead reward humane companies. " Peymon Mottahedeh Candidate, US House CA-41 " I am against cruel treatment of animals and humans. However, I believe that Government is the problem, not the answer. We do not need another bureaucracy, running our lives. " Michael Benoit Candidate, US House CA-52 No No No No No Pat Driscoll Candidate, US House CA-5 Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Joe Williams Candidate, US House CA-40 Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes D. Art Tuma Candidate, US House CA-3 No No No No " To the extent that such emissions and antibiotics harm neighbors, yes. " Harland Harrison Candidate, US House CA-12 Yes Yes No opinion No opinion Yes " If we forbid cruelty to animals, the prohibition must not depend on who owns them. We must always balance such laws with property rights, however. The farmer's right of ownership is not any different than the rights of someone who buys an animal for any other purpose, such as companionship or scientific research. " Kevin Akin Candidate, US House CA-44 " I am reluctant to try to force my own opinions and preferences on others. In particular, I am reluctant to take a position in favor of federal laws that deal with matters traditionally left to the states or localities. One of the points you raise that is clearly a matter for federal regulation is the use of antibiotics in raising animals for meat. This should be regulated at the federal level, as the process appears to endanger the health of the whole country (and even world). Some regulations already exist, particularly on emissions, humane treatment, etc. These should be vigorously enforced, rather than ignored when big campaign contributors are involved. While I personally favor ending cruelty to farm animals, and I do not participate in any activities (such as eating meat) that lead to killing farm animals, even " humanely, " I do not favor regulations and laws that enforce vegetarianism on the public. But I am in favor of ending profit-motivated or unnecessary cruelty toward animals, even those destined for slaughter.
