Guest guest
To those interested in a better world: This is a great documentary about the problems with our economic system. It has inspired me to think about creating a peace economy, instead of one based on violence. I was able to convince my friend Aseem to show this film as part of his series, so I hope many people get to see it. I'll be wearing a name tag, but you can ask the organizers if you can't find me. -martin " The difference between what we do and what we are capable of doing would suffice to solve most of the world's problems. " -Mohandas Gandhi ---------- Forwarded message ---------- Aseem Das <aseem> The Foundation for Global Community concludes its summer film series with the award winning documentary Who's Counting? in which Marilyn Waring, the foremost spokesperson for global feminist economics asks " Why is the market economy all that counts? " She challenges the myths of economics, its elitist stance, our tacit compliance with political agendas that masquerade as objective economic policy, and shows us how the current calculation of GDP has no negative sides to its accounting such as damage to the environment and how it excludes anything which is deemed to have no monetary value like the unpaid work of women. Marilyn Waring was elected to the New Zealand parliament when she was just 22 years old, and was re-elected three times and eventually brought down the New Zealand government on the issue of making New Zealand a nuclear free zone. This film has inspired many people, notably the Who's Counting Project, to work on human-scale economic alternatives, local currency exchanges, and more humane ways of measuring the quality of life and has won following awards: Chris Award, Columbus International Film & Video Festival GENIE Award, Human Rights Watch International Film Festival Silver Plaque, Chicago International Film Festival The Foundation for Global Community is located at 222 High Street, Palo Alto. The film will show on Tuesday, Aug 26th at 7:30 pm, popcorn will be served and a short discussion will follow the film. A donation of $3-$5 is requested, no one turned away due to inability to pay. Please forward to others who may be interested.
