Guest guest
Here is a reminder for the discussion tonight (see details below). Last week we had four new people from our veg group attend! Topics for tonight and next week: AUGUST 20TH- Alternative Economic Models AUGUST 27TH- Fluoridation-A matter of choice? I hope to see many of you, especially since the schedule for September will be set either tonight or next week. --Glenn. I have been attending it for about a month, and wondered if any more from our group would be interested. Scoop: Here is the scoop. With a minimum of rules, each Wednesday from 7:30 to 9:00pm at the Borders at 456 University Ave. (the New Varsity Bldg, downtown Palo Alto), people in groups of no more than 8 discuss a pre-arranged topic. Past topics include “what is right livelihood,” “the relevance of moral virtues in society,” and this week’s topic is “has capitalism outlived its usefulness?” Vegetarian and vegan people generally have a lot to talk about, whether it’s about eating habits or other issues, including the progressive, political, and spiritual. This is a great forum for many of us to speak about compassion or whatever it is that motivates us to be vegetarian/vegan in the first place, or our opinions on other topics. Proposal: Since topics are chosen for a month at a time by those who are at the discussions, I propose that more of us come out this week and following weeks and suggest “veganism” as a topic. Please keep in mind, though, that the purpose of Conversation Café is not to convince or persuade someone else of your viewpoint, but rather to listen, seek to understand, and honor other points of view. Further, there is no requirement to come to consensus about anything. People just speak what has personal meaning and heart for themselves. And I often find that in listening to other viewpoints my own becomes clarified. Attend: If you’d like to attend, email me in advance (glenn_miracle) or just show up at the Borders book store/café on Wednesday, and look for the signs and/or people at tables out in the atrium adjacent to University Avenue. P.S. There is also a Conversation Cafe that meets in Cupertino on 2nd Tuesdays and a couple of groups in Santa Cruz on Mondays or Wednesdays, as well as elsewhere around the Bay. See http://www.conversationcafe.org/cafes_schedule_national.html for contact info. P.P.S. Although the topics may sound heady, the discussion is light, spirited and sometimes passionate. I definitely recommend attending wherever you can!
