Greetings SVS members and friends,

It's that time again! Time to begin planning Earth Day 2003. As in years

past, the SVS will coordinate the food vendors, (vegetarian, naturally).

There are many other opportunities to get involved with Earth Day planning.

Earth Day 2003 is linking up with the Sierra Club and tonight is the first

meeting (see agenda item 2 below). I encourage all who are interested in

creating another fabulous Sacramento Earth Day to attend tonight's meeting,

at least the " Earth Day " part if not for the whole meeting.

> minorities, economically disadvantaged students and females. These

> groups have traditionally not had an opportunity to experience nature.

> Current statistics show only 4% of California school children have an

> opportunity to experience the outdoors through in place educational

> programs. The Sierra Club hopes to change this by creating a broad and

> diverse bi-partisan coalition including justice, religious groups,

> educational organizations and environmental and social justice groups to

> put together legislation aimed at creating a state funding mechanism for

> non-profits groups and public and

> private schools to receive state funds towards enhancing outdoor

> programs for at-risk youth. This campaign is targeted for two years and

> hopes to take in viewpoints from local Sierra Club chapters and other

> diverse voices from around the state before introducing the legislation
