Guest guest Posted August 5, 2002 Report Share Posted August 5, 2002 * * * * * * U p d a t e and R e m i n d e r * * * * * * On August 21st, the South Bay Vegetarian Society is pleased to announce our FIRST ANNUAL CAMPING EXCURSION in Grizzly Flat, CA to begin at 9:00 a.m. on August 21st. The first day will be mostly setup and preparation, but everybody is welcome to join in the adventure. The trip is planned for five days. What: FIRST Annual South Bay Vegetarian Society Camping Excursion Where: Grizzly Flat, CA When: August 21-25, 2002 Time: 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday (in Sunnyvale) to 6 p.m. on Sunday. However, join with us as your schedule permits RSVP: Please respond by noon on Sunday, Aug. 18th. Email: oneal (Dave O) or by phone him at 408-244-3711 When you sign up, a map will be provided. Temperature may vary from high 40s at night to mid-90s during the day. Plan your wardrobe accordingly to stay warm. Also, expect to get dusty and dirty at least on your shoes. And expect to see deer and other small animals. WHAT'S AVAILABLE AT THE CAMPSITE: two wash basins on a large stump a single sit-down toilet a designated tree for stand-up relief (with privacy screen) a gorgeous natural environment ABSOLUTE MUSTS TO BRING: + Tent with Ground Cover + Sleeping Bag + Flashlight + Water: 2 gallons/person/day (for both drinking and washing) + Food: all pre-cooked and enough to last you for the duration of your + stay (If you bring food to share, please coordinate it with Dave.) + Mess kit (non-breakable eating utensils, plates, cups) + Bath supplies: biodegradable soap, washcloth, towel, toothbrush, + toothpaste, hand lotion Trash bag for your trash and garbage + Insect repellant + Comfortable pair of walking shoes + Lots of positive energy and a spirit of camaraderie! OPTIONAL ITEMS: + Sun glasses/sunscreen + Hat + Sweatshirt/sweatpants (for nights) + OPEN FIRES are prohibited! You may bring a BBQ or Portable Camp Stove + Lantern + A folding chair + Camera + Ice chest with your favorite cold drinks + Musical Instrument + Special beverages of choice + Your favorite group game/cards + Your favorite reading material + Your best jokes/stories DIRECTIONS TO GRIZZLY FLAT (from Milpitas): The campsite location is 136 miles from Milpitas (approx. a 3 1/2 hr drive). From Calaveras Blvd and I-680 NORTH, travel 17 miles to the I-580 Junction; Go EAST on I-580 for 21 miles; Approaching Tracy from the Altamont Pass, Take the I-205 turnoff for 15 miles (where I-580 forks to the right); After bypassing Tracy, head NORTH on I-5 (toward Stockton) for another 10 miles; Approaching downtown Stockton, Go EAST on Highway 4 to the merge with I-99 (6 miles); Head NORTH on I-99 for 1.5 miles; Continue NORTH/EAST on Route 88 for 30 miles (just past Clements Route 88 makes a Left turn); Turn left (EAST) onto Route 124 heading toward Ione--be careful here, as road eventually goes through town => " Stay on Route 124 " as you meander its numerous name changes in downtown Ione (Church, Preston, Main, Shaklee); Eventually (after many miles), you will Turn Right (124 ends here) on Route 16, where it quickly merges with Route 49 heading toward Plymouth; In Plymouth, Turn right on SHENANDOAH ROAD (toward Fiddletown), merge Left at the Fiddletown fork (if you go to Fiddletown, you missed the turn)--continue on this road, eventually the name changes to MOUNT AUKUM ROAD--continue for another 11 miles; At Somerset crossroads, Turn right on GRIZZLY FLAT ROAD for 8 miles; Bear left at " Grizzly Flat, Grizzly Park " sign and Continue for 4 more miles on STRING CANYON ROAD until it ends at Scaroni Road; Turn left on SCIARONI ROAD and travel for 0.4 miles; Turn right on CAPS CROSSING ROAD and travel for another 0.5 miles; Look for " SBVS " sign on left side of road. Park on the property staying close to the road. The campsite is up the hill past the large oak tree. IMPORTANT NOTES: This location is at the 4,100 foot level, so your cell phone will not have a strong or consistent signal, so don't count on using it for getting directions. Grizzly Flat is on all California state maps. Get one at AAA.
