Also, pickers get to bring a small bag of fruits to bring home. I am not picking at this time, feel free to participate. Sunny -- VILLAGE HARVEST UPDATE: ----------- In this issue: - Thank you Palo Alto! - Village Harvest in the News - 2002 Harvest to Date - Upcoming Community Harvesting Events ---------------------------- THANK YOU PALO ALTO! ------ Thank you to everyone who contributed to making yesterday's community harvesting event in Palo Alto with the Valley of Heart's Delight a success! Everyone contributed, fruit-picking volunteers, homeowners, box donors, equipment from Second Harvest Food Bank, and pick up and distribution of the food by Urban Ministries. We harvested 1955 lbs! Urban Ministries began distribution the fruit the very next day through their meal and brown bag program to the over 300 people that they serve a week. Fruit grown right in Palo Alto is going to feed people in need in Palo Alto. Communities taking care of it's own - that's a wonderful story. VILLAGE HARVEST IN THE NEWS: ------------------- Over the past week, Village Harvest has been mentioned twice in the San Jose Mercury News. We were mentioned on the front page of the Friday, 7/19, Home and Garden section and there's a picture of our Community Fruit Harvesting event yesterday in today's, Sunday Valley Section. At yesterday's event with the Valley of Heart's Delight in Palo Alto, there were reporters and photographers from both the San Jose Mercury News and the Palo Alto Weekly. Look for photos or mentions in both papers in the days to come. 2002 HARVEST TO DATE: 24,022 lbs. ----------------------- That's over 20,000 lbs! or 10 tons of fruit. Which is equivalent to 60,000 individual servings or enough fruit for 714 families of 4 for a week. Additionally, many of the homeowners who call are surprised to find that there is someone who could use all of their lemons, grapefruit,... Many of them are happy to pick the fruit themselves and are referred to drop off points in their communities. We're continuing to building connections to put to use what is available in abundance. AUGUST 6th, Tuesday Meet 8:15am, Second Harvest Food Bank, 750 Curtner Avenue, Willow Glen, Volunteer Room Partner & Recipient: Second Harvest Food Bank Community harvesting in Willow Glen. Including one grapefruit tree that the owners have estimated 1,000lbs on the tree! Instructions for volunteers: - Dress with long sleeves and comfortable shoes... Long sleeves are to protect your arms from branches. - Be prepared to drive or carpool from home to home... If you have a large car or truck, it's always appreciated - Feel free to bring small bag to take home fruit for yourself. Tree ripened fruit from Santa Clara Valley... it doesn't get any better than this!
