NUTRITION NEWS FOCUS

" Nutrition news is important. We help you understand it! "

Today's Topic: Zinc and Your Prostate

Prostate tissue concentrates zinc, so it is logical to assume that

zinc is involved in prostate health. A new study finds that men who

take high levels of supplemental zinc are at increased risk of

prostate cancer.

From about 47,000 men, over 2,900 cases of prostate cancer were

observed during 14 years of followup. Use of zinc supplements up to

100 mg per day was not associated with prostate cancer, but in men who

consumed more than this level, there was a 229 percent increase in

risk. The longer zinc was used and the more taken, the greater the

risk of advanced prostate cancer. There were 412 men in the group who

consumed more than 100 mg of zinc. The study was published in the

July 2, 2003 edition of the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.

HERE'S WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW: One hundred mg of zinc is eight times

the recommended amount. Men who took in the most zinc also used

significantly more calcium, vitamin E, iron and folate. It is

possible that one of these nutrients played a role in the findings.

Although this type of study cannot prove a cause and effect

relationship, it is enough to question such high intakes of zinc.
