Guest guest Posted May 1, 2003 Report Share Posted May 1, 2003 HEALTH HAZARD ALERT - AMIRA BRAND PEELED GARLIC IN WATER MAY CONTAIN DANGEROUS BACTERIA OTTAWA, April 30, 2003 - The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and Amira Enterprises Inc. are warning the public not to consume Amira brand Peeled Garlic in Water because this product may be contaminated with the bacteria responsible for botulism, a foodborne illness in humans. All codes of the following products, imported from China, are affected by this alert. 1. Amira brand Peeled Garlic in Water, sold in a 500 ml glass jar, bearing UPC 0 69467 30106 8 2. Amira brand Peeled Garlic in Water, sold in a 250 ml glass jar, bearing UPC 0 69467 30109 9 Amira Enterprises Inc., Montreal, Quebec, is voluntarily recalling the affected products from the marketplace. These products have been distributed in Quebec and Ontario. Botulism is a life-threatening illness caused by the build-up of toxins produced by Clostridium botulinum bacteria. Food contaminated with C. botulinum may not look or smell spoiled. Consumers should dispose of the remaining product immediately. There have been no reported illness associated with the consumption of these products. The CFIA is monitoring the effectiveness of the recall.
