CANCER: Prevention Linked To Eating Fruits, Vegetables, WHO Says

Eating fruits and vegetables may reduce the risk of some cancers,

particularly those that attack the gastrointestinal system,

according to a scientific review by the World Health

Organization's cancer research division.

" In many studies, there is a fairly consistent association of

higher levels of fruits and vegetables intake with some reduction

in cancer risk, " said Paul Kleihues, director of the

International Agency for Research on Cancer.

A group of 22 scientists from 10 countries meeting in France

estimated that one in 10 cancers in Western countries is due to

insufficient intake of fruits and vegetables. Though the group's

chairman, Tony McMichael, said there were no conclusive links

between fruit and vegetable consumption and particular cancers,

scientists reportedly said the clearest evidence suggested a link

to stomach, lung and esophageal cancers (U.N. release, March 13).
