Guest guest
Happy New Year everyone! We had a very busy social season, that has finished now. Part of that, we went into the city to visit friends this past weekend, and went to a vegan Chinese restaurant to eat. The vegan part of the plan is fine there, but the soy sauce is a regular soy sauce based on wheat... I've been 100% for almost a year now, but I succumbed to the temptation of the sauces at the restaurant. Then in the city, veggie stir fry is the easiest vegan meal to get at regular restaurants, so I had several more meals with regular soy sauce cooked into the food over the rest of the weekend. My main symptoms (when I was eating gluten) have been depression and developing lump/swellings here and there. This time, a small swelling came up in one of my salivary glands, resulting in a blocked flow of saliva and swollen gland. I also just finished crying (the depression!). ...sigh... Thankfully, my body seems to be rallying as before, and with it, my determination to stick to the 100% gluten-free lifestyle that can be SO inconvenient, and is SOOO worth it!! I used to think of myself as a highly emotional woman before I knew about the impact of gluten. But honestly, I have hardly cried at all since going gluten-free. In this past year of being ONE HUNDRED percent gluten-free, I have felt happy MOST of the time... even when problems have come along, I've felt calm and able to cope. This past weekend of eating some regular soy sauce, and poof... dissolved into tears, feeling overwhelmed by any challenge again. For me, life gets to seeming REALLY difficult when under the influence of gluten! :-( Anyway, I thought I would " confess " my moments of weakness to you all... it's cleansing for me, body and soul! And helps me build up my resolve to stick to what I need to do to have the quality of life I want. We can consider it my New Years Resolution I guess... I've rarely made them because I take them seriously. This seems like a good one. Wishing you all well... Deborah

This is how I explain to people how easy it is to be gluten-free - because being on gluten is SO MUCH WORSE! " Falling off the wagon " is a pain, but it can be a great motivator to keep ya off gluten! Hang in there and get some rest! Just having a little bit by accident takes me a few days to recover and feel back on my feet - can't imagine what several meals would do to me! Good luck!!
