Guest guest
Yes, I guess I never thought I just adding other things to add nutrition to the bread, my concern was all of the starch. I guess since it's nearly if not entirely impossible to make good tasting bread without starch, adding some things into it would be the answer. Thanks for the tips! : ) I have another question....I have just started to experiment with making breads. I've noticed that they kind of all taste the same. The texture tends to be 'eggy' even if there are not eggs. Does anybody have any suggestions of their favorite recipes (even if they are not healthy to begin with) or their favorite health food store/mail order bread. I'm thinking of splurging and ordering some bread, have you found any that you like? Thanks so much! Guest guest
After trying many expensive types of rice bread over the years (some were downright awful as well as too " starchy " ), the only one my family likes is made by Food for Life. The Brown Rice Bread is our favorite. Guests have all liked it, and even my non-gluten-free daughter (she's 28) says she likes it better than wheat bread. They also make it with Pecans or with Almonds, but our favorite is just the plain brown rice bread. It has to be toasted before eating or it is too " doughy " . But after toasting it has a nice aroma, tastes very good, has a good texture, and it makes excellent sandwiches and toast. It is sold in the freezer or refrigerator section of health food stores and keeps best in the refrigerator at home. To get the price down a little (10%), we buy it buy the case (6 loaves) from our local health food store and store it in the freezer. If your local store doesn't carry it, talk to their special order person. It may be they can they can it from their natural food distributors. We started ordering by the case years ago because our HFS didn't carry what we wanted, but now it seems all the HFS we have been in carry Food for Life brand. I tend to get mine too soggy as well. >Does anybody have any suggestions of their favorite recipes (even if they >are not healthy to begin with) or their favorite health food store/mail >order bread. It is made with a millet/brown rice mixture. Some of it has yeast, others does not. They make a flat bread and an apple cinnamon raisin bun made with no honey or other sweeteners. The acr buns are fabulous and taste just like gluten breads. I love the millet special bread and eat regular sandwiches on it. This stuff is hands down better than any other gluten free bread we have made or bought and I have tried many, including the kinnikinnick. There is also no fat in this bread. Some health food stores carry these, but I had to order directly from the bakery. I ordered on Thursday, they shipped on Monday and I had the order on Wednesday. Prices are in the $3.00 range for a smaller loaf of bread. One caveat, I had a small problem with billing, but that was handled okay, and I plan to order again. One of the reasons is that I am so happy to be eating sandwiches again. I'm eating a vegenaise, cucumber, romain, tomato sandwich most every day for lunch and am literally thrilled. My kids are eating almond butter and jelly and/or honey sandwiches every day. We don't limit honey in our house, even though it is an animal product. You must order 24 pieces when you make an order. This can mean a combination of their products including the apple cinnamon raisin buns, flats, dinner rolls, hamburger buns, and assortment of different breads. They make their gluten free breads on different days than they make their gluten breads. This stuff is truly amazing. I don't have any relationship with this company other than that I have ordered from them once and plan to order again. Susie
