" Nutrition news is important. We help you understand it! "

Today's Topic: Almonds and Risk for Heart Disease

Many previous studies have examined the benefits of various types of

tree nuts and peanuts on risk factors for heart disease. The latest

chapter in this book finds that eating almonds reduces LDL

cholesterol, lipoprotein(a), and oxidized LDL levels, all thought to

increase risk of heart disease.

Twenty-seven middle-aged adults with elevated blood cholesterol

completed this study. They ate either 37 or 73 grams (a bit more than

one and two ounces) of almonds or whole wheat muffins to make up the

same calories for four weeks each. This study appeared in the

September 10, 2002 issue of Circulation.

HERE'S WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW: Almonds provide a

high amount of monounsaturated fat and vitamin E. They also are rich

in vegetable protein, dietary fiber, and antioxidants in their skins.

This provides more evidence that lipid-lowering diets can, and perhaps

should, contain nuts.
