Hi there everyone,

This is Marie in Holland checking in.

I'm sorry to report that last weekend was a slimmer's nightmare for me. I

went to Germany with a group of 5 other women to attend one of the many

Christmas markets. The one we went to is in Oberhausen. All of us are

members of a called Expat Women in Holland. Most of the members

are from either USA or Canada, but there are a few other countries

represented too.

As I said, the market was a huge temptation to the hapless dieter!! The

potato pizzas are to die for and who could resist a plate of simmered button

mushrooms with a huge dollop of garlic sour cream? There were all sorts of

similar goodies so I would definitely not put the Oberhausen Christmas

market on my list of top places to go for dieters (LOL). And of course, in

the hotel there was the all-you-can-eat breakfast buffet to cope with. They

had scrambled eggs to die for. However, the extra calories were worth it

for the great fun we all had and I'm really glad I went.

We love to eat Indian food and I especially love pappadams. However, I have

seen how much oil they absorb when they are being cooked so I decided to try

a little experiment. If you take an unoiled pan and heat it until it is

almost smoking, you can cook pappadams for a few seconds on either side

until little " blisters " appear. Of course they don't taste exactly the same

as deep fried ones but they do get nice and crisp and are good to eat with

raita or just plain. Using this method, the pappadams are much less likely

to burn that if you use a method I have often seen recommended - holding the

pappadams over a gas flame.

Cheers from Marie in Holland
