Guest guest
Hello. I am new to the group. I aspire toward vegetarian living and weight loss. I have lost weight before on low carb diets eating meat and felt sick. I need to lose about 20 lbs. and need to change my whole lifestyle over to vegetarianism. does anyone have some ideas on how to do both? Phila, Pa. It's always exciting to be starting something new, and vegetarianism should be a wonderful experience for you. > I need to lose about 20 lbs. and need to change my > whole lifestyle over to vegetarianism. does anyone have some ideas on > how to do both? To lose weight as a vegetarian? Well, many people who become vegetarians for that reason find that the switch to the vegetarian diet takes off pounds, provided they don't replace the me*t with loads of cheese and cream etc. If you want to lose weight and stay healthy I guess *I'd* recommend that you avoid dairy, except a little skim milk for your cereal if you absolutely must (although you can buy excellent low-fat soy milk - we never have dairy in the house). Eat plenty of a whole variety of vegetables (think Colour - as many different colours as you can should help you to keep a reasonable balance if in doubt) and use unprocessed grains, etc. - brown rice, wholewheat bread/ flour, wholewheat or brown rice pasta, etc., beans, lentils, and fresh fruit and salads. And oh yes - skip the sugar for weightloss and health. Easy! Why not give it a whirl? Just stop eating me*t for a start (that takes care of becoming vegetarian!) - and cheese, cream, butter (that gets rid of the animal fats) and pile the other goodies onto your plate instead. You'll love the change. Check out our Files for some great recipes that are healthy, slimming as well as being of course vegetarian. Guest guest
Tony, Hello and Welcome. I wanted to share with you that I did what you are about to do. A little more than 2 years ago, a friend recommended a change in my lifestyle, to get healthier and take off some weight. I had always wanted to become vegetarian, but wasn't sure how to do it. He gave me a lot of support, encouragement and praise (which never hurts!) I stopped eating meat and began to cut out all white flour, pasta, refined sugars, etc. What Pat said is absolutely true. In the first year I lost approximately 75 lbs. I felt better overall, was less tired, had a lot more energy. Over time I've opened up to trying a lot of new things I had never eaten before and have discovered new flavors and tastes that I might never have been adventurous enough to try. Having someone to share their recipes with you is a great plus! This group has been very helpful to me, very encouraging. Making such a life change isn't really all that difficult when you have a good support system and are committed to following through. Good Luck to you and please keep us posted as to how you are doing. Peace and Hugs, Robin
