Guest guest
I have been a vegetarian since I began taking the lessons of Self Realization Fellowship [sRF] to become a yogi--SRF is the church founded by Paramahansa Yogananda, the author of Autobiography of a Yogi. That was in 1977. Becoming a vegetarian was very easy. Because I had never liked beef, I quit eating it first. Then followed stopping eating pork and lamb. I continued to eat chicken for about one year. Then one day I ate some chicken and when I finished I was still hungry. I never ate poultry after that incident. I continued to eat seafood until the early 1990's. One day my new husband brought home a half a salmon. As I was preparing it for cooking, I thought I would follow the native American practice of asking permission to eat it. Well, the salmon's soul let me know in no uncertain terms that he did not appreciate being eat. I have not touched seafood since then. Recently at age 61, I have developed gall bladder disease. I have no stones, so my physician does not want to do surgery. However, I must remain on a very low fat diet and I cannot eat raw vegetables--fruit is fine. Tofu is a little high in fat for me so that should give you an idea as to how low fat my diet must be. I make a lot of bean and vegetable stews. I eat a lot of French bread with honey or jam on it. I eat nonfat tofu dogs and nonfat yoghurt. I have lost 25 pounds on this restricted diet, but travelling and eating out can be difficult. My blood sugar is great and my cholesteral readings have improved. My husband still eats meat and fish so I cook it for him, even though I do not eat it.
