> This looks awesome. I hope my kids like it because I don't cook more than 1

meal a night, lol. what the hex is kecap manis??

Well, they will like it if they like spicy things ;=) Kecap manis (the 'kecap'

part is

spelled various ways, including 'ketjap' etc.) is an Indonesian sauce that

comes in a bottle much like a soy sauce bottle - available in asian grocery

stores. It looks like soy sauce or tamari, but has other things in it to make it

unique. However, in this recipe, only 1 Tbsp is called for. I would use tamari

or

light soy sauce instead for that small amount if I didn't have kecap manis -

rather than not making the dish at all. Add a little extra sugar. It tastes just

fine

that way ;=) But DO get kecap manis next time you have the chance - it makes

all the difference to the recipes.

kecap manis; ketjap manis

[KEH-chuhp MAH-nees]

An intensely dark brown, syrupy-thick Indonesian sauce similar to, but with a

sweeter, more complex flavor than, SOY SAUCE. Kecap manis is sweetened

with palm sugar (see  JAGGERY) and seasoned with various ingredients,

which generally include garlic and STAR ANISE. It's used in MARINADES, as

a flavoring in various Indonesian dishes and as a condiment. Kecap manis

can be found in Asian markets. Store indefinitely in a cool, dry place.

Best,

Pat ;=)
