Pat ;=) --------- Meat eating and acid overload Excerpts from Sherry Rogers, MD., environmentalist doctor, allergist, orthomolecular physician; and from Robert Young, Phd in microbiology with a focus on nutrition. One of the metabolic consequences of eating meat is an acidic nature within our bodies. This results because we are not biologically equipped to handle these acid wastes as carnivores are. Some of the effects of being poisoned with acidic wastes are following. Acidity hampers the heart strength and energy and slows the metabolism in the body, in general and leads to hypoglycemia. When the body is acidic, it shifts the oxygen dissociation curve of hemoglobin to the right, which means it makes it harder for the body to get oxygen out of the red blood cells and into the tissues where it is needed for the chemistry of life. Acidity affects the kidneys, making them produce more ammonia to try to neutralize the acidity, this in turn wastes proteins. A body on the acid side uses up a lot of calcium to offset or neutralize the acidity, when it runs out of calcium, it steals it from the bone, leading to osteoporosis. A too acid condition hampers the normal metabolism of the cell making it more difficult to clean out and eliminate toxicity. All the bodies regulatory mechanisms work to balance the internal acid/base status. An extended over acid nature tends to create symptoms as: skin eruptions, headaches, allergies, colds, sinus problems, and lead to more seriously weakened organs and systems. To prevent a declining ph, the blood pulls alkaline minerals out of tissues to compensate, the most prominent minerals being sodium, calcium, potassium and magnesium. If the acid overload becomes too great, the excess is dumped into the tissues for storage. Then the lymphatic system must work overtime to dispose of these wastes, in addition to its usual detoxing duties. When it is overly exerted, it may dump the wastes back into the blood, creating a vicious cycle, and drawing out more minerals from the tissues where they are needed. In addition to these problems, an acid condition promotes the growth of bodily microforms such as bacteria, yeast and fungal infections, since these microforms thrive in an acidic environment. Cancer also thrives in an acidic and also an oxygen deprived environment such as is created by eating meat. Since it takes twenty units of alkalinity to balance one unit of acidity, the chances of meat eaters ever having a healthy balance are very weak.
