Guest guest
I also have heard Howard Lyman speak. I find his personal story the most interesting, going from being a heavy animal product eater and cattle rancher to being a leading vegan advocate. There aren't many of us who have to go through a more dramatic change in life to become vegan. Dr. Virgil Hulse was expert medical advisor for Oprah and Howard while they were defendants against the Texas Cattlemen lawsuit. Hulse had a book out, titled Mad Cows and Milk Gate. I've put a picture of the cover in the photos section under a " book suggestions " album. Where Howard stopped Oprah cold from eating another hamburger, Hulse's book will stop you cold from drinking milk. After reading that book, I feel like slapping milk out of the hands of kids drinking it. Hulse was an expert in the dairy industry, having been in the dairy product production business and then later a dairy inspector in California for a number of years. Hulse, too, became a vegan and, until his death in November of 1999, lived here in Ashland, Oregon, with a medical practice here in the valley. I first read about mad cow disease in 1993 when Hulse breezed through one of the local vegan potlucks and dropped off a stack of copies of a magazine in which he had an article, and that was nearly 3 years before the story burst open in the UK. He was the featured speaker at the December 1998 EarthSave potluck here. I was impressed that Hulse was a very sincere, gentle, caring and highly intelligent person with a mission. I will never forget Hulse's jaw dropper in that talk: " Typical milk in a typical store can be as much as a quarter pus. " In his book, Hulse warned about various potential ills that can be conveyed in that pus, so it's not just an icky thought but a very real danger. Hulse was amongst a handful of medical researchers and experts that had been warning the USDA about the potential danger of the bovine leukemia virus (BLV) since the late 50s and early 60s. The USDA ignored such warnings and now BLV is in over 80% of dairy herds in the US. At the same time, ills, like childhood leukemia, suspected of being caused by BLV have mushroomed in the US, with childhood leukemia becoming the #1 disease killer of children, and the evidence of the connection between BLV and various kinds of cancer and leukemia has only grown stronger. There are two books I can remember having a sweaty, " oh, my god/dess " feeling while reading, and Hulse's book was one of those (Orwell's 1984 was the other). I highly recommend reading it. I'm not sure if it's still in print, however, but it should be available at your local public or university library either in their stacks or by inter-library loan.
