Guest guest
Hi group, Some days ago I was complaining - well, I was objecting, anyway - that in my new city I hadn't as yet been able to find a few things I felt I needed for my pantry: vegetarian worcestershire sauce, vegetarian 'oyster' sauce, Braggs All-Purpose liquid flavouring, and Marmite or Vegemite. Since then I actually found, at a place called Tau on Rue St Denis (Montreal), vegetarian Worcestershire sauce, and Braggs. I'm still looking for the so-called 'oyster' sauce for my Chinese dishes and the Marmite (okay, Australia, or Vegemite!) for all those other dishes. But it led me to wonder what - *WHAT* - if I had to do without it would I miss most. So there's the Question of the Week: What Veggie Food, if it were not available where you live, would you miss most? If I were to answer, I guess I'd have to say Marmite, because of the richness it gives to sauces and stews. But I'd also have a hard time without soy - so many products! Soy milk? Tofu? Tempeh? Okay, enough. What do *you* think? Best, Pat :=)
Guest guest
Hi Pat.... If my local Trader Joe's ever stopped carrying tofu/spinach egg rolls, I'd be VERY sad! They are da bomb! Guest guest
I don't use many soy products, so I can't say that I would miss any if I couldn't get them - maybe tofu, but I only eat that once in a while. Another would be soy sauce, but I don't think I'll have any trouble finding it at any grocery store. -- mail2web - Check your email from the web at http://mail2web.com/ . Guest guest
You're right, soy sauce would be hard to do without! Fortunately, it's not considered a 'health' food or 'vegan' or 'vegetarian' so it's likely to be in most grocery stores, even if the quality is better in, well, better stores. Btw, what kind do you like best? I used to use dark soy but then I was introduced to dark mushroom soy. That has a great and deep flavour for the foods that would normally call for a strong meaty taste in the gravy. Also tamari, though I'm not sure what the difference is between that and regular soy. Ralph True enough ;=) I'd miss pasta too - I'd kinda forgotten about that when I put the question! Of course, as long as you have flour you can make your own pasta, but it is hardly efficient for every day, is it *lol* Btw, I seem to remember that my supermarket in London, Ontario, used to carry some wonderful low-cholesterol (no cholesterol problem in our family, but why tempt fate) egg noodles. They were magnificent, but I can't remember the brand cuz I stopped buying things with eggs in them for a while. Of all noodles, I think I would miss rice sticks - for pretty near any kind of asian cookery (although not authentically so, of course) and lasagne noodles. I think I could manage without the rest, except for maybe penne and spaghetti and and and and and. Well, you've made your point, right? *lol* Thanks.
