Guest guest
Thanks for the welcome. I really do feel better eating healthier. My family (being my children and hubby) are eating more and more grain and bean based dishes. They are still eating meat, but far less. I'm very proud of how well they're doing. I definitely understand the extended family problems. I'm from a meat and potatoes family. They are harder to deal with. Now with bread -- I have to admit I started out using a bread machine only. I never had any success making yeast breads by hand. Of course, most of them were white breads which I figured were worse for me than the whole wheat I was buying from the grocery store. Since I started I've killed 3 bread machines. I think whole wheat breads have been tough on them. But in the process I started learning to make it by hand. I bought a used copy of The Laurel's Kitchen Bread Book by Laurel Robertson, etc. It walks you step by step through a basic loaf of whole wheat bread. I was stunned that I could do it right from the get go. I still count this as my favorite bread. I'm trying to force myself to venture out and try some others. I do play with other flours from time to time, but they are hard for me to get locally. I had an order of whole wheat white flour come in from King Arthur's Flours...arrived today. I'm hoping to get my daughter more interested in eating whole grains. She still loves white bread so maybe this will help. Goodness, I've chattered a lot. I'm excited to meet everyone and I'll start trying to share some of my favorite recipes. Shara
Guest guest
Not chattering too much at all ;=) That's what makes lists worthwhile - people talking about what they're really really keen about! Have you tried giving your daughter some of the fruit and nut wholewheat breads? Hard to resist when they're home made and she can smell them just out of the oven! And isn't it great to make your own bread? I used to do it years and years ago, then stopped for some reason. I revived my interest around four years ago and haven't bought bread since. (Okay, not everyone can do that - it takes time and energy and sometimes, if there's a big family, a lot of bread!) I've made all different kinds, but eventually we settled down into two or three favourites for day to day eating. Fun to experiment though!
