High or Low Carb?

Hi! Like the rest of you I'm trying to lose weight by vegetarian. I joined 2 other lists, one for vegetarian lowfat and one for vegetarian lowcarb. This list doesn't seem to have an agenda either way (I think) so I'm wondering what you have found best for you for weightloss. Do you find it better when you limit your carbs? Do you find it better to eat really lowfat and therefore with more carbs?

 

By "carbs" I mean starches (breads, cereal, pasta, potatoes etc.... all healthy whole grain of course!)

 

I find myself less hungry and less cravings when I eat lowfat/high carb, I prefer eating this way... but, alas, I'm not sure the weightloss is coming... it's only been a few weeks though. I feel if I ate lowcarb I would have better success at losing, but I find lowcarb more difficult, I'm more hungry eating that way. Any suggestions or advice for me? Should I stick with lowfat? Should I work at vegetarian-lowcarb instead?

 

What do YOU do? What do you find works for YOU?

Hi Nikki,

 

I think each of us needs to find a balance of healthy foods that

works for us to make & keep us healthy. Also, for me, incorporating

regular exercise into my life has been a key component to weight loss

& feeling healthy & more energetic.

 

I find carbohydrates an important component to my eating...whole

grains, legumes, fruits, veggies, etc...all containing carbs, all a

big part of a healthy eating plan for me. I believe it is the simple

carbs that have caused problems for me, and I try to avoid or cut

back a great deal on " white foods " ...white flour, bread,rice, pasta,

etc...,foods containing a lot of sugar, and processed, packaged

foods. I believe that with this low carb push these days, sometimes

all carbs are lumped together and considered undesireable, & I don't

share that belief.

 

Just my thoughts....

Spin-off from the Atk*ns diet, perhaps? It's a mistake to lump them all

together - you're dead right there - and they are such a good source of

protein and other nutrients to vegetarians ;=)

I have to admit to being very prejudiced and opinionated...I pretty

much cringe when I hear this word :-).

Well said Sheri.

I have lost a lot of weight doing low-carb, but it's important to be aware of the types. Complex carbs, that have lots of fiber, are excellent for a full feeling - so whole grains, legumes, fruits and veggies are very neccesary. Whole wheat and high-fiber pasta are now available and taste terrific. It's the "white-death" of refined flours and sugars that are a problem. Also, vegetarian eating is very low fat generally, so I add olive oil to much of my food to help me feel full. Nuts are invaluable, as is peanut butter.

So far, I've lost 40 ponds that way.

If this list has an agenda, it is to be healthy and, it is hoped, also

free of any excess pounds that might be plaguing us ;=) Low fat is part

of our agenda - not 'no' fat, since some fat is healthy and necessary -

and we do not to the idea of low carbs, since some carbs also

are necessary ;=) It's a matter of proportion, right?

 

Me, personally? I eat smaller portions of everything when I am trying to

lose weight and absolutely ban unnecessary fat (spread on bread, for

example) and sugar for the duration. The 'white' foods are banned from

our kitchen as a matter of course - only complex carbohydrates here. I

think I actually am too fond of carbs, though, so I do try to limit them

somewhat when I am getting really serious about dropping off a few

pounds - or, especially, a lot of pounds! ;=) And I step up the exercise

too, of course - mostly walking more.

 

With few exceptions, recipes here should be good for weight loss - you

can always cut out the fat/oil if you don't like the idea - and you can

always eat smaller portions. We are, as a group, I think, concerned not

to make the mistake of losing weight at the expense of good nutrition.

 

But you will find people with all different approaches to reducing diets

on this list - what we have in common is a sincere desire to either lose

weight or maintain our present weight loss *and* to lead a healthy and

*happy* life - which means, in my mind, not beating up on myself for a

few extra pounds by punishing myself. That's why I keep trying *new*

recipes when I'm wanting to lose weight - it's my reward for trying and

succeeding *lol*

 

Maybe this isn't quite what you were meaning? If not, ask again. Sooner

or later I'm bound to get it right!

 

And others will write in and tell you what works for them, of course ;=)

Hi Donni,

 

Congratulations on your 40 pound loss!! It sounds as though you have

found a great, well-balanced assortment of foods to help you to shed

extra weight and keep you healthy. Great for you!!
