Guest guest
How much protein do we need per day? This info came from Jane Clarke, a dietician who works for the BBC in the UK. I have read a lot of her stuff and she seems to know her stuff so i trust her opinion on what she's wrote so far. Excuse the mention of meat but i didn't want to cut the quote. Laura x We only need about 0.75g of protein per kilo of our body weight, which, for most people, equates to having a daily portion of lean protein roughly the size of a chicken breast for their main meal, plus an additional portion half this size as part of a smaller meal or snack. Your body may store excessive amounts of protein as fat (as it does too much of any sort of fuel), but perhaps more importantly, high levels of animal protein, such as meat and fish, have been linked with an increased loss of calcium from the bones, also adversely affecting the kidneys and increasing the risk of developing heart disease by raising homocysteine levels within the body. It's therefore best not to overdo the protein, be it in the form of real food or shakes. If you're not much of an animal-protein fan anyway, you could derive your protein from pulses (beans and lentils), nuts, soya, tofu or Quorn.
