Low fat Makes: 6 cups; serves: 6 to 8 Serve this soup with grated Parmesan cheese if you like, or use it to make French Onion Soup (see separate recipe). 1. In a 3-quart saucepan melt the butter or margarine over medium-high heat. Add the onions; cook, stirring, until onions are very soft, about 5 minutes. 2. Stir in broth, wine, sherry, thyme, savory, salt, pepper, and bay leaf; bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer, uncovered, 50 minutes. Discard the bay leaf.
