Guest guest
Oh, yeah - while we're on the subject of Japanese food words, did you know that sushi doesn't mean " raw fish " ? Su means vinegar, and shi means salt (hence the name gomashio, or sesame salt). Vinegar and salt (and sugar) are the main flavorings in the sushi rice. Sushi is the original long-journey or picnic food. The Japanese many centuries ago discovered that by adding vinegar and salt to their rice, it wouldn't spoil as quickly while traveling. The raw fish (sashimi) was added later. It's usually difficult to get much veggie food in Japanese restaurants, since most of the broths are made with fish stock, but you can always get veggie sushi if you just ask for it. The rice and seaweed are always " clean " . Cucumber rolls are yummy, as are California rolls without the crab. There are often lots of other choices, but those two are standard. Lisa Lisa T.
