Guest guest
Hi everyone, I need some meal ideas for my 14 mos. old. Just to give you a little background, this child would eat any veg., any fruit, or anything really until now. I guess it started not too long after we switched from pureed baby food to finger foods and table foods. At first, she would eat all of it. She would even eat small, plain tofu cubes. She would eat beans and rice, vegetables cut up small, anything. Now she spits it all out. She likes fruit. She loves her oatmeal in the morning. I use a combination of Old Fashioned Oats, Quinoa cereal flakes, and wheat germ, then usually add banana and nuts. It's very hearty and a bit " wheaty " but no complaints from her. She would also eat the meat substitutes (veg. patties, chik patties etc.). Now, not so much. I feel like I'm losing ground on what to feed her to get in a balanced diet. We're kind of reverting back to some pureed veggies again to get them into her. I'm trying to offer a varied diet of protein sources, and not just the processed soy products. Does anyone have any suggestions? I used to think noone would be able to argue with me about her diet as long as she would eat everything I gave her but if she doesn't, what am I supposed to do? I do have the cookbook, Better Thank Peanut Butter and Jelly for vegetarian kids but am only just now going to prepare the first recipe in the book. So I may find out she might like some of those, but I'm looking for some simple and quick toddler friendly ideas. Please help. Guest guest
I think that as long as you are offering her a good variety, you should not worry. Don't forget that kids eat in phases. You've probably heard stories of a kid eating only one thing, (like pb & j) or only one color of food for a week. It's normal for them to want to show you whos in charge! Food is one of the only ways such a small child can do that. It sounds like you're doing a great job of giving her a wide variety of tastes and choices. -Lisa Carrie Kahl <carriekahl wrote: Hi everyone, I need some meal ideas for my 14 mos. old. Guest guest
My son is now 5, but he stopped eating a bunch of things around 2. He won't touch any fruit now or juice. In fact, he just started kindergarten, and sits in a spot everyday at lunch among the " non-fruities " as he calls them. He gags when he smells it. The fruit thing didn't bother me until he started school, because he loves green vegetables -- broccoli, green beans, peas, asparagus, edamame, zucchini. Put it has made packing healthy lunches challenging. My only advice is take your child to a Whole Foods-type store when they are STARVING. I got him to try so many new things then and we still do this occassionally. If I go alone and bring back the stuff, it doesn't work. People would marvel at him in the cart gorging on tofu cubes. Now, I can't say that he still eats everything, but it certainly helped him get over the trying new foods thing several times. Guest guest
Carrie, Sounds like totally normal toddler behavior to me! If the non-veggies in your life make comments, just tell them to check with any pediatrician who will tell you that some toddlers will eat nothing but one food for a week. Teething, combined with independance, combined with developing taste buds, combined with better things to do, can be hellish to a parent who cares about what your child eats. I still give my 2 year old pureed vegetables evey single day. I contstantly have freezer bags full of frozen pureed veggie cubes at the ready. I try to make every bite count, so he doesn't get any of the processed stuff except for tofu and some " condiments " . I add tofuttie sour cream to the pureed broc or kale, and sometimes top it with the fake parmesan made from rice, and a little avave nectar to carrots or sweet potatos. Just find ways to make things more palatable. I hide beans in things, even oatmeal. Right now he's funny about color, so he'll tolerate great northorn beans (white), but the sight of dark beans makes him fall apart. If you still use cheese and the baby likes it, use a little cheese as a topping, or fake cheeses of course. And there is nothing that says you can't give her oatmeal for dinner if that is what she likes! I don't cook our oatmeal - we soak it overnight in soy milk and some fruit juice. Oatmeal is the most awesome vehicle for other nutrients. I put ground nuts and seeds, cut up or ground (when dry) beans, tofu, flax and wheat germ, kelp, etc. I have a friend whose child will eat anything as long as it is topped with a specific salad dressing. Don't worry. My bet is on a tooth. I bet a new tooth will soon poke through and she'll be more accepting of food once her mouth isn't so tender. Sometimes you can tell that they are getting a tooth, and sometimes you can't. In regular grocery stores around here there is a brand called Dr. Prager's. It is heart healthy frozen foods. They have some spinach cakes that my guy always eats. The ingredients are really simple, so if your toddler likes it you could easily figure out how to replicate them. Guest guest
That happens to many children. They eat great, everything until one day when they won't eat anything. My daughter told me that her taste buds changed. You really just have to wait them out. Eventually they open up to new things again.
