Guest guest
Hi everyone! I just wanted to share a story that makes me proud of my omnivore Mommy. I'll try to keep it uncharacteristically short. Last week my single mom was at an out of town business convention. At the same hotel in which she was staying was also a poultry convention. One night she was in the hotel night club with several of her single female colleagues, and they were scoping out the scenery, if you know what I mean. There were some attractive, well dressed guys there, and the ladies at her table decided that one was particularly cute. When he, the cute one, started walking toward their table carrying 2 drinks, well, the ladies were all excited. So this handsome man walked up to my mom, handed her a drink and struck up a conversation. She said their was something she didn't like about him, but thought she would chat with him and not be so standoffish. When he told her he was a veterinarian, she thought, " hmm, my daughter will like that - someone who cares for animals. Well, he procedes to tell her that he is a veterinarian for the poultry industry. She said that from that point on she didn't hear a word he said because all she could see when she looked at his face was the black and white picture of too many hens crammed into a tiny cage that she had seen while with me in Pangea vegan store. So SHE TOLD HIM AS MUCH right to his face and right in front her business associates!!! First he tried to deny that chickens are kept in battery cages, but she told him that she knows the truth. He told her that the chickens don't mind, that like to cuddle with eachother. SICK!! She told him that unless he could give her one good reason why his industry feels that it is ok to treat living creatures in such a horrific manner, then she has nothing more to say to him, and he could give that drink to some other ignorant woman. He told her she doesn't know what she's talking about. So she told him that he better save his money because more people are going to start waking up and stop eating chicken. She told him she'll never eat chicken again. Whew! So... he turned to the gaping mouthed group of ladies she was with and asked if any of them would like the drink he had offered to my mom. Each one said no, and when he walked away, they all cheered. Well, I don't think any new vegetarians were made in that group, Mom included, but I think that the scene was dramatic enough to have planted a seed. She told me this over a TVP non-chicken salad sandwich on whole grain bread, that she loved. I really don't think she'll be eating any real chicken any time soon. Sorry, I didn't make it brief as promised. Nikki
