Guest guest
I have been approached by a group called EarthSave, which has a connection with VegSource, about putting on a public walk in MS to promote a healthy, vegan diet. They asked if there are vegans in MS who might want to participate. What do you think about this? Here is what they sent me. Dick: EarthSave is thinking about having a vegetarian walk in Mississippi to stress eating healthy foods. I grew up in Jackson and wanted to be a part of this--live in Dallas-Fort Worth now. Now they are talking about moving it to California because they surmise there are not enough veg'ns in MS to make it worthwhile. So I am trying to locate some veg'ns in MS who might be interested in doing this. I am googling vegetarians and got your email. I don't know where Mize is, but I hope you can come and/or put me in contact with veg'ns around MS. Is there a veg society there? Terry ------------------------- Terry, We have a vegetarian group, mostly vegan, that has had a few meetings in Jackson. I live about one hour from there. I know a few vegans on the Mississippi gulf coast, but I haven't heard from them since Katrina. What sort of 'vegetarian walk' are you thinking about? ------------------------- Dick: EarthSave is putting together a health walk somewhere in US. A big media event to call attention to the health and weight effects of a plant-based (EarthSave is about vegan) diet, it's influence on chronic diseases, educate the public in the area where they walk, etc. They are just getting organized to do this and hope to do it on EarthDay week-end next spring. They originally picked Mississippi because of the poverty there and the fact that MS is the fattest state in the union. I don't know how far they are walking but the plan is to end up at the state capital. Now a few people are pulling for CA instead saying there may be race issues in MS, few vegetarians on hand to support the walk, MS people are not receptive to outsiders, particularly yankees (they are basing this on civil rights walks in the 60s, believe it or not), and other stuff along that line. I hope to find a few vegetarians who would agree to get involved so we can keep this walk in MS for the good it would do there. CA does have plenty of vegetarians, true, but MS has a greater need for this to raise public awareness there. CA, in general, is already aware of the good aspects of vegetarianism. The people wanting CA also brought up the fact that MS may be so focused on Katrina that the walk will not draw attention. While that may be true, now, I doubt if MS will only be focused on Katrina, especially by next April. However, I am not there so that could be correct. What do you think? The main person wanting CA, and making these arguments, is Jeff Nelson, the owner of VegSource. Of course, VegSource is in CA...... A guy from Rainbow Foods in Jackson is getting involved but other than that, I don't think there are any MS people involved. I was online looking for veg groups to bring in, but can not find any. If you can put me in touch with a few, I would appreciate it. Terry .... Be kind. Be of good cheer. Dick Ford www.dick-ford.com
