B-12 Deficiency and Asthma

My 4 year old son experiences frightening asthmatic symptoms whenever he

develops the slightest cold. He was hospitalized the first time he

experienced the symptoms when he was almost 4 years old and was given oral

steroids and an inhalant, which I was told to continue after he was

released. However, the inhalant made his condition worse; and it wasn't

until I discontinued using the inhalant that he improved greatly. I now use

hot/cold packs to the chest and hot foot baths and give him licorice and

echinacea teas to alleviate his symptoms during these attacks.

In search for other natural treatments for helping my son during his

attacks, I found the following statement in " Smart Medicine for a Healthier

Child " : " Vitamin B-12 deficiency has been linked to some types of asthmatic

conditions. "

I asked my son's pediatrician about this and she said that she never heard

of this finding. She didn't think that was his problem even though he is a

vegan. I couldn't find anything on the Net regarding it either. Has anyone

heard of or have information regarding this?

P.S. My son was born " perfect " and prior to his first attack, has never had

any medical problems or has required medication, not even an aspirin. We

have no family history of asthma.

You can have a blood test done to see if he has a B12 deficiency. It is

possible to have trouble absorbing B12 even if you take in enough. I have a

good friend who has to have B12 shots due to this problem.

Look into magnesium also. Both my boys are mildly asthmatic. When

first diagnosed, I did some research and found many supporters of

giving magnesium supplements.

Good luck.
